Default Sandy Koufax

Was just curious what others would do. If you could buy a Sandy Koufax rookie for $25 thats a true beater, who would add this to their collection? The card is trimmed on both sides. A small tear and writing on the back. The image is clear and colors bright. I know it doesn’t have much value if any,but was wondering who all adds cards like this to their collections?

Because I don't own one, if one was offered to me that looked like it was worth $25 dollars, I'd likely go for it.
Normally, I try to avoid beat up cards, but if they are on the cheap, then why not?

I would probably go for it. Heck, that is about an hour of work for a burger flipper nowadays. This kind of question spans all eras of cards... Sometimes you take what you can get.

This here. It is one of the most iconic cards in the hobby. If I could buy any card in that category that wasn't in my collection for a fraction of what it is worth, I wouldn't care about condition. You can always upgrade and sell for a profit.

I’d go for it. I have a couple cards from that era with the borders trimmed off, and I think it makes the colors pop more.

I can see picking up a beater of a Koufax rookie. A nice Koufax is very expensive, so a rough one is better then nothing.

Even the King of quality Lionel Carter had beaters.
This one was priced at a dime (see the back scan) when he bought it.

Never thought Biff Schlitzer would be in the same conversation as Koufax
Biff never had a winning season as a major league pitcher, his best season was 1909 when he went 4-4

Don't do it. Over time, Sandy will end up looking like Babe here. Unfortunately that is the inevitable side effect of getting older.

Brian (actually...get it! It's like getting an older mutt at the pound...more often than not you both will love each other)

Don't laugh, it ain't THAT bad. I would have it in a heartbeat. If you decide you don't like it, sell it to me. I think Koufax is my favorite pitcher of all time.

You did great. Key cards of key players will always have a buyer. I'll post a recent purchase I made as soon as it arrives. Was less than $100, but very similar purchase to yours.

It's like debating whether or not to hook up with the hottest girl in the world, who happens to be a quadruple amputee.

Sometimes you just gotta make the most of a situation. In my case, it was a Banks Rookie. Size is OK, no trimming, centering good, surface is just shows a bit of wear.

I remember a guy at a show about 30 years ago showing me a Joe Namath Rookie that looked absolutely great except for a kid penciled his initials on the back. He paid $1 for that card. Biggest steal I have ever seen.

The seller did not use good judgment on that one.

Definitely a good find for a few bucks. If it makes you happy and you can afford it, go for it.

When I see that Ruth, I think of two other cards which appear routinely on Net54: Large-Ass Herzog and bocabirdman's T206 Waddell. They've grown on me quite a bit throughout the years.

Default Koufax RC

Hell Yes !

You can make a checkmark on you "bucket list" and later down the road you'll come across another chance for a "better" Koufax RC and make a decision on that card. Good Luck !

Koufax 55.jpg

Yeah, I've got better corners, but I also have the mustache variation. I paid more than $25 because of the 'stache I guess.

This card is in my complete 55 Topps Mutant Set, many of which are below low grade, but others somewhat better.

I like my re-bordered Williams card better.

The border is from a Preston Ward card, so technically this is a Williams/Ward Hybrid, very rare.

I would buy it for sure. I have no problem owning serious beaters. I recently won this in Andy Sandlers auction and am beyond happy just to own this card for my T210 Ft Worth team set.

This. Ultimately, it's your collection. You're buying for your own enjoyment, not to impress anybody else. If you're happy, then I'm happy for ya. Congrats on owning an iconic card.

The only card my father is still has from his childhood is a 1966 Koufax that his cousin gave him for his bar mitzvah. Koufax was/is his hero. I've offered since to buy him a rookie, but he's happy with his 66.

Glad you like the Ruth Eric. I am associated with two of the triumvirate...of course the Ruth, but also the T206 Waddell I consider one of my finest underbidding achievements when it popped up on ebay so many years ago.

I think I get to see it more often because Mike won it than if I had, so it all worked out for the best for the viewing public.

Not surprising Brian. Mike keeps the Waddell in his pocket at all times.
Trust me he waddles when walks.

I probably would. Depending on my mood and what else was there.

Condition isn't really all that much of an issue sometimes.

Well, it's not in tattered condition, but it is Sandy Koufax (and Don Drysdale too) and it is one of my favorite possessions irrespective of cards.

I’m new here, but thought I’d reply. I don’t mind and actually enjoy decent looking dinged high end cards! Tells the story of roads traveled ya know. As others said if you get a chance at a high end card that’s weathered a bit but”s in your price point go for it! I own several, and love them.
