I could be wrong, but I think the same cover was used for multiple Beadle guides. I can scan my 1867 one if you want, as I think it is the same cover for both years. Mine is in rough shape but not horrible.

Here is 1867, 1868 is proving harder to find.

1867 was reprinted. That's why it is the easiest to find.

Barry-
When you say reprinted, do you mean more recently or was the 67 guide double printed back then? My 1867 one is very rough, and I am fairly certain it is from the time period, but as always I like to check. I will post a scan later today. Alan |

Thanks Rob! I was wondering why the copy posted above looked so nice. Here is mine which I believe is original. Anyone have any pre 1867 versions to share? I know an ephemera dealer who has an 1862 guide, but she does not want to sell it yet. I am not even sure how much to offer when/if she is ready to sell it as there is very little searchable sales history for these guides.
Also, did anyone see the handbill advertising the 1868 Beadle Guide and mentioning Chadwick? It sold on eBay last month for over 500.00. I do not recall seeing any other non-newspaper/periodical advertisement for these guides. Alan |

1868 broadside
Here is the broadside you mentioned. Could you post a larger version of the article from 1867, or tell me how to enlarge it? I think the article itself might confirm or eliminate Chadwick. I think I have some stuff I will try to dig out. Also what is the newspaper, the sports writers for the various papers are listed in some of the early histories. Having said that, I think you are right, the "special" correspondent is probably Chadwick.

Thanks! That handbill is incredible. I will try to post a better scan this evening of the newspaper article I referenced in the other thread. The newspaper is the New-York Tribune which I believe he wrote for in earlier years.

Alan- the one you have is clearly an original. I believe SABR reprinted the 1867 guide a number of years ago and passed them out to those members who attended that year's national convention. Maybe that isn't exactly correct, but the 1867 was reprinted.
It is almost impossible to find a 150 year old guide in pristine condition. The one you have pretty much sums up what you would expect it to look like, given they were made using poor quality paper. There are some Beadle Guides that have survived well, but those are rare indeed. |

Is that a period cabinet photograph of Chadwick?!

Gary,
Yes, it is period, and inscribed. i am pretty sure I sent you a photo of it a long time ago, but posting photos is not my strong suit. I have 1870 and 71 related guides and convention manual, but not 1867, sorry. However, since the paper was the Tribune, it is even more likely it was Chadwick. Anything pertaining to rules was usually left to Chadwick to report. |

Thanks Barry! I should probably find a reprint to read at some point.
bgar, that is an amazing photo of Chadwick! Thank you also for the additional information on his writings. To try to read the article, you can right click on the image and save it to your computer. Then open the photo and use the magnifying glass in your photo viewing software. Or, email me at aelefson@hotmail.com and I will send you a better copy. Alan |
