Default 1920s Zeenuts - question

Posted By: Alan Elefson

Hi-
I figured this was a long shot, but why not ask the question anyway. I am travelling for work and will be looking at a bunch of early to mid 1920s Zeenuts at an antique store tomorrow afternoon and I was wondering if anyone could provide me with any rarities to keep a look out for. I know to look for HOFers (doubt there are any of these) as well as Jewish last names but I was curious if there were any other specific rarities in these sets? I glanced through a small stack today and they were all missing their coupons and in rough shape so unless they are really cheap (or are rare) I will not get them. I also was curious if there was any specific year or years from the 1920s that are tougher than others (like there are in the sets from the teens)?
Thanks in advance,
Alan Elefson

Default 1920s Zeenuts - question

From my collecting experiences the earlier the 1920's the more difficult they are. 1920,1921 and 1922 would be the scarcer ones imo, and from what I have seen. There are more experienced Zeenut collectors though that would have better insight....regards

Here are some...

Oana (Hawaiian Player)
O'Doul (should be HOFer)
Reese (Ruth bunkie)
Nevers (NFL HOFer, and 6 touchdown in 1 game guy)
Driscoll (NFL HOFer)
Yellowhorse (Native American player)
Thorpe (obvious)

Default 1920s Zeenuts - question

Posted By: Alan Elefson

Hi-
Thank you to everyone who posted and emailed me about which cards to be on the lookout for! The shop closed early on Wednesday, and I had to run over during a lunch break on Thursday to go through the cards but many were not priced. I picked up 8 Zeenuts in total and am awaiting a price on the remaining 50 plus cards (the 8 I picked up were very reasonably priced in my opinion). I had to skip lunch, but it was worth it (although driving two and a half hours to the airport on an empty stomach was not fun). Below are scans of the 8 I acquired. Averill was the only HOFer in all of the cards I looked at. Could someone tell me what year the Walters is from (top left corner of second scan)? Also, I thought the miscut on the Tobin was interesting (card immediately below Walters in the second scan).
To everyone who sent me an email I will respond either today or tomorrow in the order I received your emails. Please note this is not a BST thread. It is more of a thread to keep your faith up in finding cool stuff at antique shops! Thanks again for everyone's help!

Alan,

I agree with Leon, the early 1920s issues do not come around often, and even some from the teens. Most likely what you would see are the ones from the 1930s, and if that is the case I would not pay too much for them if they are in rough shape.

good luck

Jimmy

That has to be the greatest pose of any card. I don't have one but it is of a catcher. It would stick out like a soar thumb. Maybe someone can post one. It is just the coolest pose of all baseball cards,I think.
