Default Prognosis for "Shiny Corners"

Hello fellow collectors! Long time reader, first time poster here!!

I recently purchased a collection where many of the star cards had been housed for years in acrylic holders of various description. (Yes, I knew what I was getting into by purchasing these!)

Most of the more valuable cards show no signs of being encased as they were, but there are still some which have the trademark "shiny corners" when held in just the right light. As an example, one is a Carew RC which I would estimate at EX-MT or NM, but I'm not going to have it graded (yet) due to a couple bright corners. Might come back as altered...

On to my question...does anyone have positive experience with these cards losing the shiny corners, improving, etc. over time once they've been removed from the acrylic? If so, can you please describe what you did? I'm certainly not interested in doctoring the cards, so let me know if you're aware of an acceptable solution here for me and/or the person who owns these next!

Thank you

Welcome! I have never seen shiny corners or heard of any solution. I’d be tempted to try pantyhose though, which I understand can, on occasion, get gum stains out. Might be something to research further or to test out if you have any commons in your collection.

Does this condition show up in scans and if so can you post pics, maybe one of the pre war cards you mentioned and the Carew ?

I've seen what you are describing. The best answer is "maybe". Sometimes a TPG will flag it, sometimes not. If it is noticeable it will turn an otherwise near mint card into an ex card.

It took a while to get a good picture because it's much easier to see with the naked eye. Had trouble uploading the photo, so I'll post it later if I can.

Thank you to all for the responses so far!

Usually if you are having trouble uploading pics it is because they are too big. Shrink them down to 1.2mb or smaller.

Thanks for the hint on the picture, this one works. Quality of the pic is not great and yes, there is a glare, but you can definitely see the contrast towards the corner and how much brighter it is than the rest of the white border on this Jackson card. Couldn't get the Carew RC to show up on a pic--it's much easier to see with the naked eye.

Thoughts on whether or not this will go away over time, or with via some honest, acceptable means?
