Default “Rainbow oil smudge” in PSA slab?

Haven’t pulled this out in a while. I bought it last year. Can you guys see the “rainbowing”? I’m worried/wondering - if it’s on the card or due to the holder? Is this normal at all?

The rainbow oil looking areas do seem to move some when I apply some pressure.

Really hoping it’s not the card.

Thank you.

ugh,

I cannot find it now. But one of the TPGs talked about this very thing. It has to do with the effect of the light refracting off of the slab cover and not the card.

I believe it was PSA but I am not finding the article at the moment.

Newton’s rings have annoyed slabbed comic book collectors for years. Candidly, I’m surprised it took this long to read about it here.

I had several David Beckham foil Rookie cards come back from PSA this summer with a similar type artifact on the backside of the holder. Seems to be common with thinner sticker type issues. Something to do with the sleeve encasement PSA uses, I think.

I just recently got a card back with this same issue as well. Just another reason to hate the version of their slab with the extra plastic sleeve, imo.

Default Newton's Rings

I believe PSA refers to this phenomenon as "Newton's Rings" in an attempt to explain the poorly aligned inner sleeve that thus causes light reflection and refraction.

Some Mylar sleeves can look like that all on their own. I've never really worried about it.

Exactly, and agree on your last point. CGC graded comics have had this issue for years. Sometimes you'll see a comic advertised with the disclaimer of "Newton Rings".

While frustrating in the comic book world, the items do indeed move. Last I heard, CGC will not re-slab the books for free.
