Posted By: Anonymous

Ok, I sold a few cards today and I now have about 1300.00 in my paypal. Ive been searching ebay for something to buy but nothing looks that good. Any opinions on what I could buy and if any are for sale.
What would you buy this week if you had 1300 you just wanted to spend on cards? Pre 1933

You could make a decent dent in a midsized to small 1920's or 1930's set, and then continue to grow your collection. Of course it depends on whether you are a "set collecting" guy or "type collecting" guy, or perhaps a little bit of both. I keep starting projects only to get about 15-20 cards into a set and then end up putting it on the backburner, sometimes picking it up again later & sometimes abandoning it alltogether.

Any of the big name T206's in PSA 5 ... and centered !

W.Johnson, either of the two
Mathewson, any of the three
Cy Young, any of the three

anything less than the 1300. - keep the change.

Jeff-

I guess its my duty to announce to the board I did indeed find a Texas Tommy Lajoie although it's in a SGC 80 holder (I hope thats ok). I spent the last five hours sifting through different places on ebay.

It actually has a $1300 BIN and it's in the Amish Antiques section.

Good Luck.

If I didnt already have the card, I would buy a 1933 Goudey Ruth maybe SGC30 or PSA 2 ish type grade. I'd Recommend either the Red one #149, my personal fave, or the batting pose (full body DP) #144. Mines an SGC20 but with that Money and this economy i think you could find a 30. Goodluck

Dave, I appreciate you spreading your hobby knowledge around. In exchange for your kindness, I found an old fashioned Amish butter churn -- in the pre-1930s baseball card section. It's all yours.

If I may ... Dave, in order to fulfill your hobby duties, I think you're required to start a new thread announcing your find. And, because there are collectors who might want to buy this card but don't have Internet access, you're also required to call them. I'll e-mail you the phone list.

Finally, when the Grand Hobby Wizard decides which collector is allowed to buy the card (and at what price is 100 percent fair to the seller, of course), if that collector doesn't have sufficient funds, well, guess who that falls on?

But thanks for taking the time and making the effort to find a hidden gem.

Well as it stands Rob, I've already emailed the seller. I started feeling a bit guilty. Even though I wasn't going to buy the card, I don't think anyone else should have got a TT Lajoie in a SGC 80 for $1300 either. He promptly raised the BIN to a $42,000. Which I feel much better about him receiving.

Hey Rob,

Several years ago I interviewed Pete Center for the oral history program. Since you're fond of the Indians, you know he was a pitcher. He told me he got his start professionally when he was 'scouted' as he pitched for a town team. The 'scout' was a fellow with a nearby coal company. They had a company baseball team. The fellow proposed that Pete and another kid on the team come work for the mine, that their duties would be light, they'd be paid well, and then they'd play for the coal company team. Pete and his friend agreed. They showed up for work, and the man peeled them out as all of the other miners went down into the mine... he held them back in the office. Then, he handed rifles to them both, and told them to go out on the coal pile and shoot at rats whenever they saw one; then when the whistle blew indicating the work day was over, they were to rub coal dust on their faces lest their co-workers think they'd had it easy. Pete spent the summer shooting rats and pitching baseball.

If you EMAIL me your mailing address to my linked email, I'll mail you a 3x5 signed by Pete. Peace.

Ty Cobb bat off shoulder would be first choice but any decent condition Ty Cobb would work. If not pre 33 I would say 33 Gehrig in 4 which have been going for 950-1200.

Any tough back T206 Boston National I don't have.

(Shameless plug...I got the money, I just need someone to present the card.)

If you're asking how I think you should spend your money, you can never go wrong with a Cobb.

"What would you buy if you had 1300.00 today? "

Well, you could buy 500 shares of Citigroup, but you'd have to beat the federal Government to it.

(Hope I didn't out anything here!)

I know it's probably sacrilege here on the vintage forum but I would sink it into whatever decent condition Topps set from the 50's up to about 1965 that it would buy. 1964 is one of my favorites. Oh, what fun it would be to have $1,300 in blow money (no, not that kind!).

A nice HOF T206 portrait. I don't think you could go wrong with a Cobb or Young.

I'd pick up a D304 Hal Chase.

If I couldn't find one, I'd buy my wife some shoes. Not willingly. It would just happen if I couldn't find a D304 Chase to spend the dough on first.

Assuming I could manage to keep the money to myself (and couldn't find a D304 Chase), I'd pick up an E94 Dougherty, E97 Hemphill and spend the rest on a bunch of cards I'd later regret and sell at an absurd loss.

David, have you been married for like 6 months? You can ALWAYS find a D304 Chase. And the pair of shoes is just a bad idea. Very bad precedent.

I've been married for over 26 years. The battle of shoes v. cards is never-ending. And escalation by both sides, is costly. In our family, we've just decided not to ever talk about it.

I've been married for 4 years. The ratio of instances where I have located a card I need that Andrea feels is more important than a pair of shoes she's identified is horribly skewed in her favor. Of course, this is why the Amex bill comes to my office. Interestingly, it's also why I end up paying for both shoes and cards and reside in a tent in the woods.

Ok, you're clearly a quick study, David. It took me 11 years to figure out the cc bill to the office trick.

Peter - Aside from people having different opinions tot he same question, it seems there are 3 different questions going one here:
1) What card would make you happiest, which we can't answer well without knowing your collecting focus - if you're a set builder, the answer is different then if you only like HOF cards, etc.
2) What card would we buy with an extra $1300 lying around, which is bringing responses germane to what each of us collect - i.e. someone working on a T206 set that just came into $1300 extra would use it to buy a Demitt or O'Hara that they have been wanting for years but unable to afford.
3) What card would be the best investment, which might be a card from a scarce issue.
