Default Cardinals vs Yankees?

Posted By: runscott

I hope not, but it's looking that way. Red Sox can't win with Schilling on the bench, and the Cardinals look like the best team in baseball right now. I tried to get tickets, but both Houston and St. Louis were sold out...gee, wonder why Atlanta wasn't? (I'm not complaining! )

Pictures from Game 5 of the NLDS are now posted on my web-site - sorry for the smallish nature of them, but I have several more rolls to add, including game 1 with Clemens and the celebration after game 5. If you want to see much larger scans made from the negatives, or pictures of particular Braves players, just send me an email.

This will be the 6th World Series meeting between these two historic franchises:

The Cardinals won in 1926 and 1942 and 1964.

The Yankees won in 1928 and 1943.

Max:

Glad you brought 1964 up.

I was at the 5th game (my uncle had to go to a business meeting and gave his ticket to me) and saw everybody's favorite sports broadcaster, Tim McCarver, hit a home run in the 10th inning to win the game. Unfortunately for the Yankees, McCarver had a great Series, as did Mantle and Gibson.

The Cards eventually won, so they are due some payback.

Kevin

The list I was looking at was continued on the next page and I had not seen that. Thus, I have now edited my post to include 1964.

Still before my time, however!

Hal

As a six year old, I was too busy watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan (perhaps that was November....) to concentrate on baseball.

My first baseball recollection is 1967 and Lonberg versus Gibson. 1968 and Mickey Stanley replacing the immortal Ray Oyler at shortstop was also big. There was something wonderful about smuggling transistor radios into class to listen to the games, and having the teacher pretend that she didn't know what you were doing...

(As an aside, you're now 6 of 8 done)

Max

I know it may look that way now, but I hope not. Being born and raised a Cardinal fan. I remember well the 64' series., But it is 1967 I hope to re-live.
As a lifetime national leaguer, I am tired of seeing the Yankees. Bring on the Sox. Please bring on the Sox. It may not be as good for the TV ratings, but in the long run it is better for baseball..

Or is it you just fear the 'evil empire' more? I know if I was a Cards fan I would prefer the Sox..

Maybe I missed something, but I'm heading out to watch what I thought was the third game of the NLCS, which included the Astros. It could be that the series is over and I simply missed something, but I am planning to watch AT LEAST two more games. And with a heckuva lot of luck, I'll be seeing the Astros play the Red Sox in the World Series.

I agree with you Scott on the redsoxs and astros series everyone has already got St. Louis there I just dont see it no pitching what so ever. If it goes to 7 games, guess whos probably pitching for the astros hint the rocketman. Talk at ya in a few days. P.S Did anyone see Clemens today WOW! Im not very old but hes the best Ive seen in my life hands down.

My guess, based on how Garner's "pulled out all the stops" in the play-offs so far, is that after Backe tonight, the Astros will go with Clemens in game 6, followed by Oswalt in 7. Looking good

Have you seen the records for pitchers in the playoffs on three days rest? Not good. From 1995-2002 starters working on short rest went 6-15 in 32 starts, with an ERA of 5.20. On top of that, Oswalt did not exactly dominate the Cardinals yesterday.

I wouldnt assume victory against that offense just yet. As you so aptly stated when the Cardinals won the first two, the series isnt over.

Scott, I guess with the Astros ahead 3-2 now, you don't need to remind people anymore that the Cardinals haven't won the series already. Happy you have some vindication...

The assumption has been Yankees vs Cardinals for several days now - might still turn out that way. In any case, we're getting plenty of great play-off baseball, especially with the two great games tonight...and....

...Manny Ramirez is a total stiff. The little league errors he made in the outfield tonight and last night were pathetic. Good thing the Red Sox have Ortiz to take up the slack.

Well Gary, since Scott was the original author of the post, I am not sure how much "vindication" he was looking for.

That said, the placement of the question mark at the end of the post title is looking to be a good call, as LaRussa is once again snatching an NLCS series defeat from the jaws of victory. If anyone can explain pitch hitting for Woody Williams (who had given up one hit in the first inning and made 94 pitches) after the seventh with two out and no one on base, I would love to hear it!

I hate Larussa.

Two predictions:

1-Don't write the Cardinals off yet

2-Do not start Clemens in Game 6 on three days rest. Give him full rest and hold him for Game 7 if there is one. Clemens on three days rest is throwing him away and forcing Oswalt to also have to go on three days rest. I know this may be putting all your eggs in one basket, but otherwise I think you will see two early bullpen calls. Also, Clemens in Game 7 allows Houston to use Oswalt out of the bullpen if necessary.

I agree, saving Clemens for a possible game 7 would be the best move for the Astros. Matt Morris (starting game 6 for the Cards) is nowhere near the same pitcher he was 2-3 years ago; he has been giving up a lot of runs all year, and quickly in games.

Even if the Cards do win game 6, a potential matchup of Clemens vs Suppan would have to favor the Astros moreso than starting both Clemens and Oswalt on three days rest.

Cards need to remember what got them 105 wins. Their offense the entire 3 games in Houston was a shell of what it was during the regular season.

Its too bad the astros didnt win yesterday then Clemens would have started game one against Boston, oh well Im gonna go out on a limb and say Clemens will pitch his best game of the playoffs. Theres no one I would rather have on the mound then him.
