Default Show and tell of your Claude Rossman cards

Claude Rossman played 1st base for Cleveland, Detroit, and very briefly for St Louis (AL). He had a great 1907 World Series for Detroit batting .474 (in a losing cause........
Detrot 0 vs. the Cubs 4).

Check this out....Hughie Jennings reportedly was one of the first managers to fine players. Rossman was one of the first to be fined $50 by Jennings for hitting a home run
when he was called on to bunt (ref. SABR).

Rossman's Major League career ended Sept 3, 1909. This fact is most likely the reason as to why Rossman was printed with only five T206 backs (includes SC 350 fac. 30).
Rossman does not exist with AMERICAN BEAUTY 350, BROAD LEAF 350, CAROLINA BRIGHTS, CYCLE 350, DRUM, El PRINCIPE de GALES, OLD MILL, POLAR BEAR or TOLSTOI.

Are there any more Candy, Tobacco (or other products) featuring cards of Rossman......let's see some ?

Hi Ted,

Shouldn't it be "Rossman was printed with only FOUR T206 backs a T213-1 back"?

Btw, nice Type 1 Coupon

Best Regards,
Craig

Craig

I consider the 1910 COUPON cards as another T-brand of the T206 family.

The identical T206 fronts (with BROWN captions)....the stylistic design of their backs that is identical to the AMERICAN BEAUTY,
BROAD LEAF, CYCLE and DRUM backs......and, their (circa Spring/Summer) 1910 issue date indicates to me that these cards are
indeed T206's.

Other collectors may differ, and that's their prerogative.

Best regards,

TED Z

No card scans to offer (of course, I have a T206 Piedmont at home) but Rossman is an interesting player. A good hitter who protected Crawford and Cobb during the Tigers' run from 1907 to 1909, he suffered from the yips, ala Steve Blass, Steve Sax and a young Dale Murphy, though his particular brand would cause him to freeze with the ball, which probably led to the end of his career. He died in an insane asylum in the 1940s. Stories like his are the reason I really enjoy collecting the monster. These days, our heroes are a little too antiseptic for me....

Interesting that these 2 both were cut long, stealing the name of the player above them. Wonder if these came from same sheet, same row.

Hey guys,

Some nice looking Rossman cards.

And, those double-name cards are really cool.

Default E97 Briggs Rossman

This is the only other card of Rossman that I know of.

If some one here has this card, please post it.

And then, there are probably some esoteric sets that portray Rossman. If so, let's see them.

John

Cool blank back....and an interesting off-register collar effect on this Rossman.

Thanks,

TED Z

Thanks Ted, I often wonder if the pencil notes are period and have something to do with the printing process.....I guess we will never know but fun to think about.

Nice cards yourself.

Cheers,

Thanks for posting your Briggs Rossman. Your E97 identifies him with Detroit. But, his E96 has him with Cleveland. Both of these Candy sets were issued circa 1909-10.
This is very strange, since Rossman was traded from Cleveland to Detroit in December 1906.

Yea I've seen some weird things from the candy issues. (Bob Wood's e103 is another odd one) I'm sorta glad this one worked in my favor since I can use the E96 of Rossman for his Cleveland card rather than a W600.

Great, I'm glad the E96 Rossman works out in your favor. Speaking of Candy card errors....the E97 (Briggs) card of Cy Young (Boston) actually pictures Irv Young.

Perhaps a Net54er has this card and will post it here.

Ted,

For what it’s worth, I consider your assertion that 1910 Coupon cards are part of the T206 set to be a valid starting point for a meaningful discussion. While I have very little experience with the Monster, the image of several backs that you posted stands on its own merit, in my humble (and admittedly inexperienced) opinion.

Best Regards,

Eric

I really appreciate your opinion regarding the 1910 COUPON cards.

Many on this forum disagree with my premise....as we have had several discussions on this subject.

Thanks and best regards,

I am going by the listing in the 2011 Vintage BB Standard Catalog. Could you please tell me of your source regarding no Detroit Rossman in the W600 set ?

I'm not questioning this, as I have never seen such a W600 Rossman. But, the only W600 in my collection is Matty; therefore, I am certainly no expert on
these cabinet cards.

Incidently, thanks for posting the Rose Postcard of Rossman....a pretty card.

Ted,

It was not listed in my old Beckett Alphabetical guide, it was known and listed in the W600 set however. I just stated that in the event someone was using the alphabetical guide.

Sporting Life initially offered the Detroit Rossman in 1907 and it does appear on the W600 set checklist. However I have not seen or have knowledge of an example of that cabinet card to be in existence. So I stated - probably none exist. There are many players depicted on W600s that were offered after 1906 that are in that category.

Thanks for this checklist of the Rossman cards.

I have to correct you on the T213 entry.....Claude Rossman exist only in the 1910 COUPON (T213-1) set.
He was not printed in the T213-2 or T213-3 sets.
