Default Louisville Colonels PC info

Any Louisville experts here? Is this Louisville Colonels?

Looks mid teens to me, but not sure. Any ideas?

Robert: I won this team portrait of the 1923 Louisville Colonels squad from one of the AH's a while back. I'm hardly an expert on anything and I reserve the right to be wrong but the "L's" on the jerseys look to be very different so I'd say it is not Louisville. Very nice postcard nonetheless.

Hi David,

I was looking at yours while trying to research this one. Great piece! I've seen some others with an "L" similar to mine. I think earlier (or later) teams had a similar L, but I'm also out of my element here.

I have dozens of random, early postcards and I usually wouldn't ask, but this one strikes me as interesting for some reason. There was another PC of the same team (different photo with stands in the back) that ended on ebay yesterday.

Rob

Tried to match faces with the bitsy photos at BBRef.com for the 1913 and 1914 Louisville teams. Might have seen Lowdermilk, Niehoff and Nicholson but could just be my eyes playing Fimoffian tricks. A couple of the players have very distinct faces; maybe someone will recognize one of them right off the bat.

Can you show the back of the PC? That could narrow down the possible date and help confirm or disprove a Louisville connection.

I like the headless dog sitting out front. Hard for them to stay still with the long exposures.

The back is AZO pre 1914.

I didn't even notice that was a dog. That's a strange lookin' dog.

I am looking at the style of the uniform, and am thinking that the photo is from an earlier era. Take a look at the belt style on many of the players. Those, to me, look like turn of the century if not earlier. Thoughts?

Lots of teams still used that style of belt into the 20th Century. I'm pretty sure this photo postcard is circa 1910.

Would still like to "see" the back if possible.

Looking back over what I have images of, in 1905 they were still using the cursive-style "L" on their uniforms, 1906 has vertical stripes like a referee's shirt, 1907 their socks had a big white stripe in the middle, 1909 has a very simple block-style "L" (see below), 1914 and 1915 they're back to the cursive "L", and 1916 does not appear to have a letter on the shirt at all.

That does leave some gaps (1904, 1908, 1910-13, 1917, 1918), but should help narrow down your searching. Good luck, and I would love to see what turns up!

Lincoln wore similar uniforms in 1906 to 1915
