Not sure what to say about that Mike. Great pickup but that YooHoo didn’t age all that well

Hey Ben, unfortunately I still need one of the bottle caps, the variant of the one on the bottle. That, plus the two other bottles.

I bet if I were to shake it up and put it in the fridge, it would taste the same as it would have 60 years ago - blech.

None of it is "expensive", but if you haven't seen either of these items before, then they might be of interest.

MICKEY MANTLE "His Final Inning" -
This is actually a fold out pamphlet, not a card. These were apparently printed in 1998 for the "American Tract Society", and they were reprinted again in 2012 for "Good News Tracts".
This is basically several pages long, and it gives a brief look over Mantle's career. After a few stats it briefly goes over the length of his career and finally ends with Mantle turning to God/becoming a Christian with the help of longtime friend Bobby Richardson.
It is worth a read, even if you aren't overly religious.
These are widely available too, and you can find them on Ebay around the clock for less than $10.

The gold colored card at the bottom of this picture is a die cut 1997 Scoreboard Mickey Mantle Collection.
The back of the card reads "For Promotional Use Only".
It lists his career '51-'68, and the date he was inducted into the HOF.

The final piece is the most interesting.
It is basically a die-cut oversized card, from the same 1997 Scoreboard GOLD Mickey Mantle.
Its celebrating the 30th anniversary of his 500th career home run.
Like most newer products, this is indeed NUMBERED......... 5784/7000, It can also be found on Ebay, and these go from $10 - $50.

Nothing Earth-shattering here, but I'd never seen a couple of these cards. Plus my Father snagged them for me gives them some sentimental value.
The Mantle "super collectors" might want to check out the "30th anniversary of his 500th home run" card.....if they haven't seen it already
It might not be of tremendous value, but it looks great~!

Years ago, I bought a Mantle card on ebay. I can't remember which one it was now as this was maybe 10 years ago. Wasn't a crazy high grade card or anything, but the seller included a nice hand written note thanking me for buying his card, and he included that "Final Inning" pamphlet. I still have it hanging up on the bulliten board at my desk. It was a nice gesture.

The same thing happened to me. Bought a card on ebay (I think it was one of his 1964 All-Star coins) and the seller included the pamphlet too. Probably the same seller. A nice extra.

I haven't posted on this thread in a while. None of these are recent pickups, but I was at the bank and took a pic of a few of my favorite Mantles.

Default Dormand Jumbo Mantle Postcards

Haven`t posted in this thread for some time now but never get tired of checking out fellow 54`ers newest additions. For me, couple of 1953 Dormand Jumbo postcards. Really like the image and wow they are large (9 X 12) so condition can be a real challenge. Bye the way, Jesse outstanding my man. Keep them coming......

Very, VERY nice Mick eye candy Hugh and Jesse. Thanks for sharing your Mantle joy! They are a joy to behold. --Brian Powell

PS---With the patch signifying the 50th anniversary of the New York Yankees on his sleeve, that would date the photo on the regal Dormand to 1952, Mickey Mantle's break-out year!

Default The official Mickey Mantle Pickup Thread. All Mick, all the time!

I just started collecting Mickey. It started with the 68 Super Stars card I had as a kid. This isn’t the same one. The original along with the rest of my collection was either lost or stolen, but I never forgot about it.

When I came back to the hobby at the end of 2018, it took about a year for me to realize I enjoyed collecting vintage.

I started with Willie Mays, because I also had some of his cards when I was a kid, and up to now have been chasing him, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax.

I always thought Mantle’s cards would be too expensive but checking comps, they seem to be more affordable than I thought. These are lower-grade as I just really wanted the cards and don’t care as much about the grades, but I’ve been trying to get them as well-centered as possible. I don’t mind if they’re a little off though.

I’m not sure it’s the design alone that bothers me, but I will be looking for a Manager’s Dream in a higher grade.

My most recent pickup was the 67, but embarrassed to admit I overpaid about $100 for it. To be honest, I had spent much of that day trying to purchase a 58 Aaron on MySlabs which fell through, and being fatigued by hours of scouring eBay for a fairly priced card, I came across it but forgot to check comps before putting in my bid.

It was sitting around $230 with 2 hours left IIRC, and I thought I could snipe it for a little above that, but I went all in and ended up bidding what I assumed was the highest the card could be worth only to learn the previous bidder was willing to pay just as much for it, so no savings there…

I was a little upset at myself learning I could have gotten a 4-4.5 for what I paid if I just checked comps, but it was too late because I had already won the auction. Oh well.

I do like the card and am happy with how it looks, and since it’s a PC card I’m not worried about losing money on it, so it’s not that bad as long as I don’t keep doing this.

A real beauty! Great centering and registration.

Jesse, always a pleasure to see that group of Mantles. The 53T is a very, very special card. That red corner is a 10, which is beyond uncommon. And it is always great to see that when you sell a card, that it remains in the collection for many years-- brings a smile and glad the 51 and 57 are appreciated parts of your amazing collection!

I have shown these two favorites before, but I recently took this pic and just love how it came out, and how these two first Topps cards look side by side. I believe this photo should always brighten the day of any Mantle fan!

Beautiful cards!
I've always liked the Topps 53 Mantle as well. Just a great looking card, imo.

The auto on this card was too bold to say "no" to. And being on a key year Mantle just made it a no brainer. A friend picked it up for me at the National.

Love that signed '61! Saw it posted on Instagram and said to myself, "If I saw that, I woulda snapped it up." Strong eye appeal, well chosen.

The 2022 National was my first show in 6 years. I picked up 40 or so team set needs, including about 15 Mantles. Down to about 45 cards remaining. Hoping to work towards the 1953 or 1956 Mantle next.

First time posting within this thread. I've picked up a few Mantle cards throughout the years. This one is my favorite. I "overpaid" for it back in 2016. I'd buy a dozen more at that price these days.

The ‘63 base card never seems to get a ton of love, but it’s one of my favorites from the decade. The blue and green just pop. This one is centered a tad low, but can’t complain about s-s.

Default Help IDing Mantle photos

Hey All:

I am not a Mickey Mantle collector but I was able to pick up the below. I have been trying to find info on some of them so when I sell them I can list them properly..

Obviously I know the first is a Rawlings premium and I have been told the second was issued with a Mantle game. The third is an individual Manny's baseball land issue that was also issued attached to a Maris that shared a common border. Is this correct?

The others I cannot ID Can anyone know what the smaller photo 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 batting RH with stadium and sky is or the kneeling with bat, or finally, batting RH with Yankee logo Lower left.

Any help appreciated

The others I cannot ID Can anyone know what the smaller photo 6 3/4 x 8 1/2 batting RH with stadium and sky is or the kneeling with bat, or finally, batting RH with Yankee logo Lower left.

Any help appreciated
I wish I could help but there really aren’t a ton of resources out there that are definitive when it comes to 1950-1960s Mickey Mantle Premiums. I wen through my old emails with Kelly Eisenhauer, checked Keyman collectibles and eBay, and skimmed through a couple of websites that have a lot of premium photos identified and here is the best I was able to come up with:

1. Rawlings Premium (as you said)
2. Big League Baseball Game, Gardner Toys (free photo included with game)
3. Manny’s Baseball Land (as you said)
4. Unknown (photo by Luis Requena, but I checked with Kelly Eisenhauer, who is an expert in Mantle items, years ago and he had no clue who issued the premium) (one was listed for sale in 2014 for $75 and I likely purchase it)
5. No clue but certainly looks 1960s. I’d listed as a “1960s Premium Photo” and you should get some interest on eBay.
6. 1960s Yankees Stadium Giveaway Photo (per Keyman Collectibles) (http://keymancollectibles.com/mickeymantlephotos.htm)

Chris:

Thanks for your help in trying to ID some of the Mick premiums I showed above.

#5 you say looks 1960's. Not that it means anything but 1956 was written on the bottom right corner by someone sometime. These all came from an old collection. This leads me to think it may actually be from 1956.

Ben W. contacted me privately about info he got from the guy he got his kneeling premium from. This is the info his seller told him:

Regarding the premium photo, I obtained the item in 1958 (when I was 12 years old and had been collecting Mantle cards since I was 10). I wrote Mantle asking for an autographed photo. He responded on July 21, 1958 with an autographed letter enclosing the premium photo. I still have the letter, which I keep in a frame in my den.

So it appears this is either a team or personal Mantle premium mailed out to fans in the late 50's. Since the seller of Ben's said he got his in 1958 it is possible it could have been around for a few years before like 1956 that is on mine.

Wondering the best way to get these into Mantle collectors hands. BST here, ebay or give them to an auction house?

If I recall correctly, I have a very similar one that uses a photo of him kneeling that appears to have been taken at the same session. I think mine was sold to me as a 1960s. When I was discussing yours, I was really just trying to convey that it appears to be a career contemporary piece rather than anything more recent. If it has 1956 on it, I could certainly see that being accurate. Either way, it’s cool and appears to be vintage/original.

As for how to sell them, I’ll defer to others. It’s so hard to price them that my gut would be eBay. But I haven’t bought/sold much in recent years.

A couple of interesting pickups.

Those who collect the Mantle Country Cookin' matchbooks know there are several variations based on the restaurant address listed on the inside. In addition to the 6 addresses (one having a variation of its own to make 7 different), there is a variation without an address. I picked up another variation of the "no address" variation. The first picture is of the matchbook I recently acquired, the second is of the one I've had for a while. Obviously the text layout is different.

Another interesting pickup is a SportsPix premium, see attached. I know there are 3 known variations, of which I have 2. One is 8"-by-10", one is 8"-by-10-1/2", and one is 8"-by-11" (I don't have this one). My new pickup is 8"-by-10" and is printed on non-glossy paper (the others are on glossy paper). The address is the same as on the 8"-by-10-1/2" version, although on this version it is not as close to the Mantle photo. I'm not 100% sure it's a legitimate version and not some "fantasy" piece. Does anyone else have this version?

Nice pickups Mike.
You have both the 8 and 9 line no address on my checklist
Not sure about a non glossy sports pix. Mine are thin paper, but glossy.

I am a fan of the "Dee" Love error myself! haha

Well, I guess I missed that memo. Here I thought I found a new variation. Oh well, at least I have it now. Now, I just need the "Dee" version.
