In the spirit of sticking to the section, I have little to offer in terms of Pre-War. Post War would be my Berk Ross Mantle. Really have to start working on the Pre-War aspect of my collection!

Hahaha, and that "mitt" they added looks absurd. It looks more like a bloated cadaver hand than any kind of functional mitt.

As far as I can tell there is only one of these graded by SGC and none by PSA. T215 Red Cross Purtell, Jersey City. And these other little "cards" don't show up too often so I assume they are pretty scarce as well.

Don't believe that was added. The shadows on the uniform front are completely different as well. Doubt they'd go to that trouble to airbrush in a glove and remove a bat, and then worry abount the shadows on the front. Those are two different images that oddly look a bit similar.

Since others have shown Post-War cards in this thread I will take the liberty as well to show this card from my collection.

You can read about the card below in an article written by Keith Olbermann in SCD:

As long ago as 1975, I wrote a column for one of the hobby’s earliest magazines, The Trader Speaks, listing all the known variations in the Topps sets issued to that point. Where I got the information, I can’t say for sure – it may have come from the research of the collecting pioneer Richard Egan. But there they were, listed as the variations for 1960:
- No. 9 Faye Throneberry (Yankees logo instead of Senators)
- No. 58 Gino Cimoli (Cardinals logo instead of Pirates)
- No. 102 Kent Hadley (Athletics logo instead of Yankees)

These cards were so scarce that I never even saw a picture of one of them until 12 years later. They had never been included in checklists of the 1960 set, and had been dismissed in hobby lore as unissued proofs or just unfounded rumors. Yet when the card of Cimoli turned up, it looked almost exactly like the issued card – it was the same thickness, it did not look like it had been cut from a sheet, and it had a fully printed back. The only differences were that it identified Cimoli – front and back – as a member of the Cardinals, had the Cardinals logo, and made no mention of his December 1959 trade to the Pirates. Up until that point, no Topps proof sheet had ever turned up with anything other than a blank back. To all appearances, it looked like an issued card – an incredibly scarce variation.

The Hadley card proved even more confusing. It came to the market in a Mastro auction in 1999 and sold for nearly $14,000 (my fault). Like the Cimoli, it looked like an issued card. But unlike the Cimoli, this one was up to date. It noted Hadley’s trade from the Athletics to the Yankees, and identified his team – front and back – as the Yankees. The only variation was the logo. Where the Yankee insignia was on all the other known copies, there was the Athletics’ symbol. It didn’t make any sense.

The artists obviously worked it a bit differently with shadows and such, but they unquestionably started with the same photo!! The most obvious thing is the 'plant eating dinosaur' on his belly...

...but also the distinct shadow lines and that white area at his collar (and the collars themselves). Plus, look at his hand on the bat. The mitt looks exactly the same. They just traced around his fingers to make a mitt. And follow the shape of his left arm from shoulder to elbow. The artist took a tiny bit of liberty, but they are identical shapes. Look at how exact of a match it is where his right sleeve ends at his wrist. Look at the shape of his right hand. The right side and thumb are a match, and check out the size of his index finger. Holding the bat it's normal looking, but when the artist created the baseball imagery, he made it huuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

Haha, yes the plant eating dinosaur/prehistoric kangaroo on his belly is really the dead giveaway/linking fingerprint that both cards are based off the same image. Good detective work!

Here's a Korean Aaron from 1982 and apparently a hot dog company. My guess is that our cards were both issued as part of the first season of the Korean professional baseball league. That's what Aaron was doing there on tour.

Fascinating thread. That 1960 logo variation is an eye opener. Learn something everyday, or at least try to! I would imagine those Korean cards haunt many the player collector.

My rarest card (thanks to Joe T, who hunted this one down for me) is a signed 1952 Bowman Mantle. There are only 19 signed, as compared to 3400 graded unsigned in the PSA pop report. It is the second rarest of all signed basic issue Topps/Bowman Mantle cards, behind the 1952 Topps, of which there are 14 examples in the pop data.

I have a few of these, got all together and haven't seen any others.



And crazily enough ended up with the complete set of these, only 25 cards not all sports. Some are 1/1 and something like 6 of the 25 weren't cataloged until this find.

At first glance this looks like the quite common 1967 Topps pinup insert. It differs in a number of ways - 1) It is printed on sticker stock (similar to 67 Pirates/Red Sox stickers and 68 Action all star stickers) 2) there is no number 3) The image is much crisper than on the pin-ups. It has been examined by many experts - a consensus of opinion is it was a 1 off prototype done by Topps - not even making it to a testing phase. To date it is the only example of any player I have ever seen.

So is that essentially akin to a Dice Game Mantle— yet signed also by Clemente. Mind blown. Is that considered the Grail of all Clemente pieces?
