See, for me, it's a toss up; Your "tipper", Brian or the maximum amount of front paper loss of that one on eBay. I still like a complete image tho.

Default Something Different

Picked up this 1909-13 M101-2 in a recent auction. 8" x 10" supplement to the Sporting News. They issued about 100 of these in this issue. Pretty cool and very good detail in photo.

I just want to say this has been a fantastic thread. Lots of tough cards I've never seen before. As a side note, with the next post, I believe this thread becomes the 3rd most popular in terms of replies since the "new" board started around 2009.

It is a great thread, and with this Batter Up of Moe Berg I just slyly caught the coveted spot.

Babe Pinelli, as seen in this W573 Type 3 card (cardboard stock instead of paper, larger and machine cut borders instead of hand cut) also was a hothead as a player, but kept his cool and exacted revenge for 22 years as a MLB umpire.

Evidently his backside was also rather large, as can be seen in these scans.

Default Trivia Question

Who gave up the final hit in Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak?

He is a Canadian of Lithuanian descent.

(Some of) His 1940 Play Ball baseball cards contain a very early advertisement for Superman Gum:

"Millions of young folks asked for SUPERMAN CARD GUM. Now it's on the way here. This new Adventure and Taste Thrill awaits you at your dealers. Ask for it. Watch for it."

Joseph V. "Joe" Krakauskas. Pitcher with the Washington Senators in 1937-1940. 26 wins and 4 saves in 7 MLB seasons. His most productive season was 1936 with Washington as he posted a 11-17 record with a 4.60 ERA in 217.1 innings pitched. He finished his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1941-1942 and 1946. He is best remembered for giving up the final hit in Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak in 1941.

Default Things were different back then . . .

. . . you had to live fast!

Here's a guy who:

< was the first major league player with the nickname of "Spider," a moniker he received because of his thin build and his excellent range as a fielder;

< at age 21, played for the 1889 Washington Nationals, primarily as catcher behind Connie Mack. Alas, the Washington club folded after the 1889 season, and he was out of work, but not before leaving us this card;

< at age 22, played for the 1890 Buffalo Bisons of the Players League, again with Connie Mack;

< in only 107 games spread across those two MLB seasons, he played every position on the diamond at least four times, except for pitcher. He only pitched once;

< in Buffalo was noticed in a story in Sporting Life which related that "Owen Clark's first base playing has caught the crowds. He is deservedly a favorite.";

< was out of work again as the Player's League folded after the 1890 season;

< was too sick with tuberculosis to play anywhere for the 1891 season, and died of the disease in early 1892 at age 24.
