Default Ugliest Card Ever

What's your choice for the ugliest card ever? Since it's my thread, I can make up the rules, and I'm going to exclude cards that are poorly drawn, like most of the W sets. Good art work, like a T206 or a 33 Goudey is fine, as long as the result is pure ugly.

I'm going to start things off with a card that's not really vintage, but is really ugly -- the 1972 Puerto Rican card of Goose Gossage.

I'm sure there is much worse and i'm not a card guy (more a memorabilia collector) but this card I think is an awful depiction of Speaker:

Holy crap is that Gossage ugly...

Anyways, I don't have a scanner so I looked up a few cards online. There's a few really good threads/forums out there for ugly cards. Here's a few of the favorites I found.

Wow. That Fernando V. card is pathetic. Just plain poor on a number of levels.

There are probably worse, but the 48 Bowman Spahn is awful!

I find the top 3 kind of ugly. Bottom one not quite as much.

Default Ugly is as ugly is

On the vintage front a favorite ugly is this Frankenegan. Another one that always makes me cringe (sorry no image, maybe someone can provide it) is the E121 of Bill Donovan.

It's so ugly I had to have one (not sure why SGC thought it an E122, bad day I guess)

Yeah, see, I just don't get it. If I'm Topps and I'm editing pictures for publications, I mean, really, is that the best we can do?! There's NO other Brooks picture that is better than the constipation look?

I collect Foxx, and the W560 is one I've absolutely never, ever wanted to acquire.

-1 Come on...the '58 Brooks card is a fine looking card. Plus, you have to admit he has the syle thing going as well; just look at the jacket underneath his jersey. Now there's a trend setter!

Of course I do collect Brooks so I may be a bit partial; just a bit though. Apology accepted k-dog

Default Mossi

I was surprised to see no one had posted Mossi and was about to search for a pic when one appeared. Thank you. Any card of that guy would have to be in the top ten.

Default Can't believe no one has nominated...

Paul Richards from the 1951 Bowman set...if I had been Mr. Richards, I would have contacted a lawyer...amazingly enough, Mr. Richards was the first Giraffe to play professional baseball...you can look it up!

I'm surprised that nobody hasn't posted any card with Willie McGee on it. He might not have been blessed with good looks, but he was a really good talent.

Default Worst and Best

Paul Richards definitely hits both the best and ugliest card lists for me. That 1951 Bowman is just plain hideous, yet I consider the 1933 Goudey of him (standing pose in full catcher gear--a virtual perspective study) to be one of the artistic glories of the Pre-WW2 card era. Look what a couple of decades will do to a guy.

I read somewhere that Brooks was asked about this card and he said he had just finished sprints in spring training when the photographer snapped the pic and that he hated the card.

Not sure how true that is, I can't remember where I read it, but it makes sense based on the pic.

I am happy to see the 66 Mossi represented. Actually came here to post that.

I do not, sadly, have a scan of the back of the 1971 Jerry McNertney, IMO the ugliest image on a card EVAR. If anyone can hook me up with a scan it would be appeciated. Actually most McNertney cards are pretty ugly. I once met Bob Humphries who was his batterymate and he said he just took bad pictures, but really Humprhies looked a lot like McNertney so he may not have been the best person to ask.

My lasting memory of Bob Humphreys:

He was a minor-league coordinator of some kind when I was in the Brewers organization, so during the season he'd travel and spend 4-5 days at a time with the various clubs. One day in Stockton in 1986, he came out of the shower during the time between batting practice and the game. As he was drying off, he yelled across the room to our trainer, "Hey, Skid, come over here and shave my back."

Yes, he was serious.

Awesome story, Rob.

If an athlete did that now, Upper Deck would be there to gather up the shavings for a "Game Used Back Hair" card.

Ha! Great reference to Walt "The Bug" Williams. My childhood friends and I still crack up over his '74 Topps card.

For ugliest card ever, I nominate the hideously airbrushed '77 Topps Manny Sanguillen. So unsightly I won't even bother posting an image.

Further food for thought: Rich Nye is bizarro Walt Williams.

The Billy Ripken "#@#& Face" card has to be on the list too.

The 1941 Double Plays have several less than flattering photos, but Paul Derringer brings something special to the party.

PolarBear... I bet that's true on the sprints w/the Brookie card. It appears that's what the look is.

See...with some of these pics the '58 Brooks is looking like a sweet looking card

While the '77 Topps is bad (pic below), it was not Manny Sanguillen's only ugly card. Check out his '81.
