Default 1924 Washington Picture Pack.....Walter and the gang......

Washington Picture Pack? from 1924/5? It was picked it up on ebay recently. The seller said the picture pack was won in a Huggins and Scott auction in '99. He sent the H & S catalog pages too, which I thought was nice of him. The H & S description said it came from a scrapbook from the Johnson estate. Actually, regardless of that provenance I probably would have picked it up anyway. I thought it was cool and they are "sort of" cards, so what the heck!! They are approx. 4 x 5 and have the Copyright, as seen, on each blank back. The only slug is shown and it is on the back of the Big Train photo. There are 23 in the grouping and here are the HOF'ers and some others.. Just thought I would share some neat images.

Found some of these in the Library of Congress: National Photo Company Collection. It looks like they have all the glass negatives that were used to make your photos. Very cool images.

Quote:
The National Photo Company Collection documents virtually all aspects of Washington, D.C., life. During the administrations of Presidents Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover, the National Photo Company supplied photographs of current news events in Washington, D.C., as a daily service to its subscribers. It also prepared sets of pictures on popular subjects and undertook special photographic assignments for local businesses and government agencies. The images date between ca. 1850 and 1945; the bulk of the images were created between 1909 and 1932. The photographic files of the National Photo Company, including an estimated 80,000 images (photographic prints and corresponding glass negatives), were acquired by the Library from its proprietor Herbert E. French in 1947.

Leon,
I acquired this same picture pack of photos of the 1924 World Series champion Washington Senators in Legendary's November 2010 auction. The lot I won has 29 photos in it, and as Legendary notes, they were used in the production of the Washington version of the 1924 World Series program. I don't have scans of these photos, so here's the link to this Legendary auction lot, which shows only 18 of the 29 photos: http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...ntoryid=111049

Soon after I acquired these photos, I started an additional collecting focus - cards of all the players on the 1924 team - which should be easier on my collecting budget than my other collecting focuses, since I already have many WaJo and Sam Rice cards (the other HOFers on this team are Goose Goslin and Bucky Harris, plus the owner, Clark Griffith). My intent is to eventually create a display with the cards I acquire along with the picture-pack photos.

Now, a little self-serving plug re "Oyster Joe" Martina, whose only year in the Majors was 1924, at age 34 - he won 6 and lost 8 for the Senators during the regular season and pitched one scoreless inning in the W.S. As far as I know, Martina's only 2 cards are the 1910 T210-2 Old Mill Cigs, which I have, and the 1924 Diaz Cigs, which I have never seen - can anyone help me with the 1924 Diaz?

Unbelievable price on those, Val. I don't know how I missed them, but I think that was the period when a lot of people were boycotting Legendary. I snagged some fabulous pieces from Kent's collection at similarly ridiculous prices. Great pick-up and right up your alley!

Leon & Hank - Thanks for your kind comments! I confess that I was surprised at the price I won them for.
