Default Satchel Paige Cards?

If anyone has been following this, career-contemporary Paige cards have really gone through the roof. An early Indians TI RPPC closed today over $1,000. How many career-contemporary cards are out there besides these:

--1949 Leaf
--1949 Bowman
--1949-50 Exhibit
--1949 Cleveland Team Issue PC
--1953 Browns Team Issue PC
--1953 Topps

Let's see some.

He's also on the Exhibits 1948 Indians team card.

Now that I mention it, it seems obvious that I should try to find one of these. It also features Doby, which fits a recent collecting focus, and I'm a Cleveland fan, so it would be nice to have something commemorating their most recent championship. Thanks for bringing this up!

My only Paige during his playing career. Wish I had something that was more unique.

Back from FL last week:

And I know it isn't a card but it is one of my favorite snapshots:

That 1949 TI looks to be from the same time and by the same photographer as my snapshot. Perhaps the snaps were used to decide which photo to use to make the TI??

Yes, sure looks like your snapshot and the SGC Team Issue are possibly taken moments apart - same place same time.

Only one I have is his 53 Topps, sure glad I got it when I did, looks like even Poor copies are $200+ now. Not finishing 49 Bowman ever, $2K+ seems awfully high for what it is. Paige belongs near the top of the pricing in my book, right there with Mays/Mantle

I've been following the trend on Satchel Paige items and personally succumbed to a bit of FOMO myself; I jumped on a 1949-50 Exhibit of Satchel Paige at around triple the price of what I could have paid last year. I was still thrilled with my pickup considering what's going on with his cards. My personal checklist includes all of the "cards" that show Paige as a member of the Cleveland Indians. If I narrow it down to career-contemporary Cleveland items, I would add the following to your checklist:

-c1948-49 RPPC (pitching follow through)
-1948 Cleveland Indians Picture Pack Satchel Paige (portrait)
-1949 Cleveland Indians Picture Pack Satchel Paige (pitching)
-1949 Big League Novelty Co. Cleveland Indians Picture Pack "Satchell" Paige (portrait, name spelled with two "Ls")
-1949 Cleveland Indians Sun Picture Camera Photos Set #2 Satchel Paige
-1949 Vis-Ed Cleveland Indians Magic Dials Satchel Paige

If I were adding in 1948-49 Cleveland Indians Team Photos with Satchel Paige depicted, I would also include the following

-1948 Exhibit Cleveland Indians Team
-1948 Baseball Magazine Supplements M114 Cleveland Indians Team ("N.Y.")
-1948 Baseball Magazine Supplements M114 Cleveland Indians Team ("New York")
-1948 Oct 6 Cleveland Press Supplement Cleveland Indians Team
-1948 Burke Motors Premium Cleveland Indians Team

There are probably several other items out there. Always looking for more, but lately so is every one else, it seems!

Not a card, but career contemporary. Copyright 1948 by Hal Lebovitz. I bought several copies from SABR around 1983/84.

Also career contemporary, if you count the three innings he pitched for Charlie Finley's A's in 1965.

Although I have a well loved 1953 Topps from my childhood this autographed and dated Aug 29, 1941 8X10 Type 1 photo is one of my favorite items in my collection.

The posted pic of Paige book wearing cap with "M" - Monarchs ? I thought caps were KC instead. Or what team affiliation with the "M" on cap ? I just don't know, Thanks

My guess would be the Miami Marlins. He was on their roster for three seasons. 1956 through '58. The Marlins were in the International League, and I think my oldest baseball memory is of Paige in a rocking chair in the Marlins' bullpen when they came to play the Columbus Jets when I was nine or ten years old. He didn't pitch that night, though, but I "almost" got to see him pitch.

If you think a Paige postcard going for $1,000 is crazy, how about the two picture pack photos of Paige that recently went for over $3,000 each? Those things have to be worth less than the postcard. I watched this snapshot of Satchel with Miami for a year on eBay before I finally pulled the trigger, and I'm glad now I did ...

With the ungraded and unsigned Team issue RPPC going for near 1100 recently makes me wonder current market on these 2 signed ones. PSA slabbed one is postmarked 8-7-48 on back!

These seem very undervalued to me still as they pre date his main stream Rookie cards. Also have a picture pack premium which presents beautifully besides a very tiny tear near bottom left corner.

FYI- Please don't be offended...this is just my late Mother's influence:

There is no such thing as 'more' unique. Unique is an absolute and needs no further descriptors. Either it is unique or it is not unique.

You have plenty of company on this...just had to point it out for Mom (she was a teacher).

The 53T was the only card I've been able to pick up before prices started rising. It's a good-looking card, but I'm starting to see it everywhere. I guess when prices go up, that happens.

I was lucky enough to just pick up an original Paige photo. It probably won't appreciate like the cards, but I do like the idea of looking at it on my shelf....

He appeared in 46 games in 1952, and it's unfortunate that there wasn't a Topps or Bowman card from that year. I used that very same original Paige photo for my 1952 Bowman Art card of him. It just feels like one of those classic "1952 Bowman" poses, and possibly an image Bowman may have used if they planned on adding him to the set.

Bob Lemke made a custom 52 Topps of Paige and sent me one years ago with a Flexichrome I bought from him. I need to dig that one out...

You had to see Paige pitch (with his double-loop wind up) to appreciate him.
I was fortunate to see him pitch when I was 10 - 11 years old.

1949 LEAF (NOT "1948" ! ! )

.

And, how often do you see this 1973 TOPPS Test issue card of Paige ?

Seeing him pitch must have made a big impression. He’s definitely an American hero! I would have loved to see him play, especially against DiMaggio or Williams when he was in his prime.

A 4? Wow, I wonder what that would go for today. Only way to tell would be by auction. Mine has more...character?

A card I have and love, but that doesn't qualify as career-contemporary is the 1967 Venezuela Retirado, in a Browns uniform.

Looks one hasn't sold since 2019, but I suspect that one would also have a jump in price for the next one sold

28 total graded PSA, compared to 3,800 1953 Topps

That's a great card, and the same image used for his 1967 Venezuela card

I also like the 1973 Topps Reprint cards, which were printed in short supply for a Topps banquet or something like that.

The un-autographed card is actually harder to find. 1976 Tulsa Oilers team set.

1940's or 50's Baseball Card Satchel Paige White House Coffee

What are the thoughts on this Satchel Paige "card" currently listed on eBay? I've been looking everywhere and can't find anything to support it being issued as part of a set or an advertising giveaway. Maybe a vintage prototype or something made decades later with a vintage look? Per the seller it measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches.

I don't own a ton of vintage baseball cards but I do have a stash of 1953 Topps Satchel Paige. The SGC's are probably going to be crossed over to PSA at some point. The artwork and card design of the Satch 53 can't be beat.

I hope that assessment is correct. It just sold for $211.50 to someone outbidding 9 other bidders.

The odds of a Satchel Paige card, previously unknown for 70 years, just now showing up are way less than 1%. There is a reason you couldn't find anything on the internet. Buyer will probably return it.

The photo is from 1948-49, and I'm pretty sure 2.5" x 3.5" cards weren't standard until 1957.
