The signature is what made it irresistible. I have a stellar Sullivan cabinet already--there are a variety to choose from--but signed? Fugedaboutit.

I can't believe I won this tonight. This moves into the top 10 cards I own and it was 2 hundos and the vig and shipping. I looked through the Leland's catalog over and over. About 2 hours before the close I saw this in "internet only" section. I can't believe it. So geeked...

Great card! Red Cross T219s are unbelievably tough to find so getting one of the keys is a heck of a pick-up for a collection.
The boxing stuff closed fast in Lelands last night; being in SoCal I was done with my bidding before I finished dinner. Several of my bids held and I ended up with over 2000 cards. Gonna be a hell of a sorting party!

Thank you Amazon!
I picked up three of the four large lots at the opening. Had one other bidder on the 4th lot--must've seen the 1915 Susini Tris Speaker in there. I basically paid a buck a card overall, which is hard to go wrong on; I will give it my best shot, though, and see if I can't lose money anyway ![]()

It is going to be so much fun seeing what type cards I have and what I don't, seeing what slabs I can replace with raw cards, etc.
I did get one cabinet lot and from the start of the auction to the end two of the subjects were elected to the IBHOF (Erne and Ryan), which is nice.

Thank you guys! Having a blast with the T218-T220 master run, though the Red Crosses aren't happening. A Honest Long Cut Black, HLC Green, and Miners complete sets will be enough for me. I dabble in adding type cards sometimes for some variety (your book, Adam, has been a wonderful resource on that front), but the American Tobacco lithographic issues are my aesthetic favorites.
RCMcKenzie - Attell thankfully doesn't have a T218 Tolstoi back available, just the Hassan 30, Hassan 649, Mecca 30, Mecca 649 no series notation backs as a series 1 card. Those Tolstoi's are darn tough, I'm sitting on just 20/50 after 15 years collecting the master set. |

Here's the checklist of the cards possible with a Tolstoi back. All 50 cards released with series 2, minus the Jack Johnson (Green background, horizontal), a rule breaking card that was added late in series 1 production and released for only part of the print run for both series 1 and 2. I've never seen a Tolstoi back of this card, and no one seems to report owning one, though there is still a slight chance it exists. There are some tough specific front/back combos on other cards, but the 50 Tolstoi's and 5 or 6 spelling error variations in series 1 are the main hurdles on the master set. I'm down to under a hundred cards left, but at this pace I'll need another 25 years or so to finish the Tolstoi's. Patsy Brannigan Knock-Out Brown Walter Bursch Young Corbett Leach Cross C.M. Thanks very much for the Tolstoi checklist. It sure helps to know what to look for. I'm at 14/50 Tolstoi with these 2 dupes. I have a lot of T218 in boxes to see if I have any more. They are not unsearched boxes, I just get unorganized and misplace cards.

Nice card, Jay. I don't remember seeing an n173 boxer before. REA or another auction house had a non-sport n173 cabinet recently. It was some obscure foreign politician. I guess customers could ask for an n173 with any image they wanted, as long as Goodwin & Co had it.

Thanks Adam, Dogs Head cabinet or small card with Dogs Head ad on the back? I think I have seen the latter.
Rob-The politician in REA was an Australian issue. I believe the Slavin is also Australian. For years I have tried to find an Australian checklist similar to the lists that have been found for baseball players in the U.S. However, I have thus far been unsuccessful. Here are some larger scans of the n174 Slavin. It seems to have a very faint "OLD JUDGE" font on the caption portion of the card. I added a link from Bill C's site which shows everyone the Australian font. I know there are a few different fonts that JoeG was describing in a thread the other day. It's good to know that other Australian n174's could be found with the n173 format...The Slavin is in an SGC 20 holder. It is about as faded as a card can get to me...Rob

Jay, I was trying to show an un-faded Australian type font like he has on there. I may have some in my collection, but he already had some scanned on there...Here is the non-sport Australian card he has(Spurgeon)...
Some of the boxers with the "hot dog" logo almost look like they belong in n172...Here are a few boxer types that I have...

Burdick did not do a good job cataloging Goodwin & Co cards. For starters, there is no one Old Judge set, just like there is no one Topps set. There were many sets issued over a number of years, in the case of Old Judges over the period from 1886-90. Many of the earlier Old Judge sets were not solely baseball sets, but multiple topic sets which included boxers, other athletes, actors and actresses, politicians, etc. The script cards were a multiple subject set, as were the low number cards and the “0” number cards. In the Old Judge book we catalog the later two sets in the Appendix section. Unfortunately, there are still some holes in our cataloging of these sets, although far less now than when we did the book almost twelve years ago.
The cards with the floating sausage Old Judge logo are from the script series. They do belong with the script baseball players. They are not a separate set. Last edited by oldjudge; 02-02-2020 at 02:19 PM. |

I was thinking these author cards were Australian, but I noticed the captions were very similar to this Mutrie. The Mutrie has an additional copyright line by Goodwin, 1888. I notice that the Mutrie I have has a little different caption format than the 336-1 in y'all's guide.
The set is easier to tackle when you break it down into different series and categories or teams and players, than trying to see it as one gigantic set of historical figures. I'm still learning, but I also forget about as fast as I learn. Rob

I think the author cards are either from here or British (yes, there are British ones too). As I remember, the British cards have fonts similar to ours. They are neat though.
To further complicate matters, some 1890 Players’ League cards have a different font than on 1889 cards. The letters appear slightly thinner. |
