Just got this in today; love this card, as it gets me 1 step closer to my Cubs team set, and it's my first card from the Lionel Carter collection. This is my 34th T206....slowly but surely.

Finally got a Walter Johnson for my HOF collection. It has great eye appeal and the small S.B. on the reverse doesnt bother me! Also picked up this record on eBay. I haven't listened to it yet though.

Another beater to add to the Huntington Ave p/c Collection. Which leads me to the question, Why is dog bread no longer popular?

Phil - Wonderful cards, congrats! Love the McGowan and have been looking for one myself. Please let me know if you ever upgrade and want to sell the lesser condition one. I love that card, nice pickups.

Hi Brian. Just a suggestion- if you would let the 3 or 4 collectors who need the Miller to complete their Obak sets win once in a while, you'd be paying $30-35 for your Miller cards instead of $300-400

Yes, Leon, there was an auction. This card showed up at my doorstep before I even placed a bid. Talk about great service!

Brian- Nice cards! You just can't beat nice caramels. I guess most folks here know by now that you just can't find a lot of these caramels in grades higher than 50 or 60, so 40s, in sets like the E94, E97 and E98 are higher ended cards. Good pick-ups.

Phil,

Very interesting McGowan. Mine is dated 1951 and says "American League umpire" below his name. Also, mine lists the school in Daytona Beach, with yours listing the school in Cocoa. I knew that different cards from this set were issued in different years. But this is the first time I have seen the same card from two different years.

By the way, here's a scan of the textbook from McGowan's school. It's from 1949 and lists the school in Cocoa, just like your card.

Bob- Thank you.

Leon, that is a very impressive looking T216 Cobb.

Mike, awesome looking T207's.

Bruce, very sharp pickup. It should fit nicely into your 19th Century Collection.

Just got these in from the B/S/T. Gives me 38 total, and I think around 9 or 10 Cubs. I can't figure out why the Devlin is only a 30; the front and back are both clean and look crease free. Guess I have to get out my loupe.

Congrats on the T227 Cobb. I tell anyone who will listen that is absolutely my favorite card ever made.

Jeff,

That's a great Bell Brand Koufax you picked up. I don't recall ever seeing a Bell Brand on this forum. They've always been one of my favorite sets, ever since I started coming across them as a kid growing up in Southern California in the early 70s ...

Dustan, that is a very nice Devlin indeed. That card is one I see consistently registered well with nice color and centering. Now that I mentioned it, keep an eye out and I suspect you will notice the same. At one point I had multiples that were all very nice and it was tough to choose which one to swap out for a different T206 portrait -- that's all I collect is the portraits.

Here's the one I chose to keep:

I finally completed my T205 Cubs team set!!!
Took about 3 years, on a budget that limited me to, as you will see, VG-EX condition cards. But I think they are all nicely presentable.

I have posted scans of the fronts and backs on my site (not all can be enlarged, but I will get to that soon, I hope). I love the writing on the backs.

http://www.thetriple-l.com/vintagechicagocubs.htm

Thanks to all who helped!

That is a truly outstanding image of Gehrig....thanks for sharing.
Never seen that M114 before.

In fact, your post has further cemented my intention to focus on some of the largest names in the sport once I finish with my current projects: Tobacco Cubs team sets, Classic T206, and post-war player sets.

The collection will not be complete without a Ruth, Gehrig, Cobb -and perhaps one or two of those crummy pre-war era pitchers, like Mathewson and Young.

someday....
