Default Good Carma for Alfred G. Richter

Posted By: Ryan

Just wanted to let everyone know of my positive experience with Al. I had posted the 60's Baseball form that I was looking for some 1967 Topps baseball cards.

He kindly send me 2 of the higher priced cards at no charge and asked for nothing in return. This is another reason why these forms are so great!

Thanks again Al! You are a true gentleman!

Ryan

What does it mean that "karma" has so thoroughly infiltrated pop culture?

JimB, as you well know, the word often doesn't contain the essence.
I'm speaking only of the culture; this thread touches upon the essence methinks.

best,

barry

Barry,
It is certainly among the most mis-used (loan) words in the English language.

Is "karma" even in the English language?

Al,
I think at this point, it is an English loan-word from Sanskrit. There comes a point when a word's usage is so common in one language, even though it originates from another, that it becomes a loan-word in the second language.

From the Oxford Compact English Dictionary:

"karma
/kaarm/

• noun (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as affecting their future fate.

— DERIVATIVES karmic adjective.

— ORIGIN Sanskrit, action, effect, fate."

Technically the definition is not completely accurate for Hindu or Buddhist traditions (which have different definitions and doctrinal uses for the term), but it is closer than most pop culture usages (e.g. "parking karma")

Getting back on track.....Al Richter is a great guy. My wife and I met him at the 2007 National and she mentioned she's a longtime Mets fan. A few weeks later, Al sent her some cool 1970's Mets stuff!! That's class.
