Visiting Baseball Graves

I made my annual trip to Arlington National Cemetery today and did some research beforehand to see what baseball players are buried there.

There are A LOT! Baseball and the military have a lot of links in history so I’m not too surprised. Some names are much bigger than others but it’s cool to have as a resource from Baseball Reference.



Getting to all these names in one visit would be impossible on foot, plus I wanted to visit some other graves of my peers from my service days

So here is who I got to

Jud Wilson (Hall of Fame) - WW1


Spottswood Poles, “the Black Ty Cobb”

Wounded in France in WW1


Lu Blue - .402 career OBP! WW1


Doc Lavan - Navy Doctor in WW1 and WW2



Elmer Gedeon - 500+ big leaguers served in WW2. Only 2 were KIA, Harry O’Neill and Gedeon


A bit surprised that the Sports section of the Arlington site lists Doubleday and not some other names like Gedeon. Poles and Wilson are mentioned at least.

Anyway, this is very military focused, but curious if others visit the graves of baseball figures. I know Walter Johnson is buried close by for those of us in DC, maybe we should start taking pics of some cards at his grave to pay tribute!

March one year our family stopped in Royston and visited Ty Cobb's grave. On the short walk back to the car my wife said, "I hear a baseball game". She thought they were piping in a game at Cobb's mausoleum. She was hearing the Braves spring training game on the radio that I had left playing with the car windows down. It was pretty funny.

It's not Arlington National, but...

Local (Beach Haven, NJ) hero Roger "Doc" Cramer is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in nearby Cedar Run, NJ.

Thank you for such an interesting post, Don.

My one contribution to this thread is Christy Mathewson's gravesite at the cemetery hard by Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. I visited in 2012 at the conclusion of the Baltimore National. There are markers for Matty, his wife Jane Staughton and their son Christy Jr. The third image is their eternal "view". It couldn't be lovelier.

Visited Matty's grave nearly 30 years ago, before the internet was there to give exact coordinates. Just happened to be passing by on one of many trips up and down that beautiful Highway 11 & 15 and saw the Bucknell campus and the cemetery. Logic dictated that Christy was in there, so we drove around and found him. Not too difficult to find from what I remember.

Harry Hooper is buried a short walk from my house, this thread inspired me to visit over the weekend. Buried in a small cemetery with his wife and 3 family member, Mr. Hooper was a fixture in this community for many years.

Cool thread.

The only player I ever took the time to track down was Edd Roush. He's buried in his hometown of Oakland City, Indiana which is about a 50 minute drive from the town I grew up in.

Cy Young
Jackie Robinson
Mel Ott

I have also visited every Presidents grave.

My Mom's family is from Lewistown and Factoryville Pa. On my last two trips up that way (both for funerals), I had hopes of getting down the road to Lewisburg and seeing Matty's grave. Didn't find the time on either trip. No one up there to visit anymore so I doubt I'll get the chance now.
