Default ebay authenticity guarantee - no longer mandatory?

Is the eBay authenticity guarantee no longer mandatory for purchases above a certain price? I have made 2 purchases this past week (one SGC graded, one PSA, both above $500), where the cards are being shipped direct to me, without the eBay authenticity review

would appreciate any insight on current policy from eBay

also - I had thought the authenticity review was mandatory - is it optional, i.e., can the seller list it without authenticity review?

Do any of the following apply:
1) Lot
2) In wrong category or title says "pack" "lot" "set" "box" "case" etc
3) Delivery address is PO Box
4) Listing allows for in-person pickup

If you post the listings, I bet we can tell you why it didn't go through AG.

I contacted eBay, and was told it's optional for the seller to list a card, at any price, as authenticity guaranteed. I was surprised. I had thought it was not optional above a certain price

Outside John's 4 reasons, is it true that seller can just decide to sell without the guarantee? Seems like that would create a lemons market, in a hurry...

Terrible program. eBay refused to honor my return request when a slabbed card that I bought arrived damaged. I should add that it was a $6,100 purchase too…..

I am not aware of that. My guess is that person was speaking out of their ear, and not official policy. I did not receive a PM.

According to the info on their FAQ page about the Authenticity Guarantee program, it is still required.

Can I choose not to have my item authenticated?
Not at this time.

Phil, sorry to hear that happened to you. It looks like you should have been able to return it based on what's on their FAQ page. What reason did they give for not allowing a return?

What do I do if my item arrives damaged?
Open a return request for “item arrives damaged.”

If the seller doesn’t offer returns, you can still request a return no later than three calendar days after the delivery date as stated in eBay Money Back Guarantee.
If the seller offers returns, you must request a return within the seller’s return window, as stated in the listing.

The item came, and it is good in hand, so no issue. Just surprised by the lack of consistency

Some items are excluded, and certain keywords in the listing can sometimes inactivate it.

You can still bypass the program by writing "set break" in the title. I sold an $1800 card a few weeks ago with "set break" in the title and it went directly to the buyer. If you write "lot" you might get caught by the filter that pushes you into listing the item as a vintage card lot.

I noticed if the sale says:

+
lot
auto
autograph
rack
pack
set

There is no Authenticity Check

And they're changing that now:
