Wildest CJ 14 price yet?

Tonight $435 for a James Scott SGC 1. Not even one of the scarcer ones, which at least explained some of the other recent sky-high prices for 1s and 2s. Can't believe that being a "Lionel Carter" would have much to do with it--what with writing on the back and everything else. Where will the market for these crest?

In the cards defense it is a nice looking 1 and was owned by Lionel Carter.

2nd highest bidder must be bidding strong on CJ's. He bid high on a couple

Makes some of the prices from only a couple months ago look tame. I'm telling you the spike is from the 100 year anniversary and the awesome Cracker Jack book by Tom and Ellan Zappala that's getting great reviews. Both part of the reason for my renewed interest.

I wonder if this is some sort of a runaway train or a bubble of some sort? In other words will these cards ever be back to levels of affordability? Ie - under 100 bucks for any example?

I think the values will come back down for the average 1914 card, and even the tougher ones. There are a few collectors vying for the cards right now b/c they are going for the set. They are bidding up the cards, or buying them at high BIN's. But when they get the cards they need, interest will wane and thus the values. I realize that this all sounds simple and obvious, but that's because it is.

A week or two ago a Psa 6 Donie Bush was on eBay. That is the highest graded Bush card, and it's also a really really tough 1914. One of the toughest, in fact. It went for $2300 or so. How can a "run of the mill" 1914 non-tough low number card, in Sgc 10 condition get $500, and one of the toughest 1914 in highest graded condition come in relatively inexpensive? It's because few are in the market for Psa 6 1914's. Very few, in fact...

a few collectors going after them will drive up prices in the short term...it happens all the time. i believe there are a lot of CJ's out there...even 14's...and over time prices will return to more normal levels.

Tom, in the same vein, there's been an SGC 5 for Schang 1914 CJ up at eBay for a couple weeks now for "just" $750--and with a Best Offer option. No takers. So you may be right that market is hot for 4s and below but few want or need anything higher. A Joe Wood authentic went for very high this week--obviously trimmed. But it fills out a collection.

Who knows for sure? But it seems to be the case. Some of the folks with the nicest sets with either Psa or Sgc are not even real collectors. They bought their sets already completed from others just to have b/c they are rich, etc...they don't dabble in what it happening in auctions or this forum. If they did, that psa 6 Bush would have went for more than $2300.

When I was going for the set, any condition was good enough for me. With the 1914's, that's pretty much the nature of the beast. If a person can collect the entire set with all 2's and 3's, he or she has accomplished something amazing.

Yeah I bought the "A" Wood. You're totally correct in that for those of us trying to complete the set I could by 4-6 cards for what that PSA 6 Donnie Bush went for. Would gladly take a handful of 2's and 3's vs. one 6 or 7.
