Default Insuring collectables

So I have some insurance on my renter's policy, but it doesn't cover much, there is a maximum for collectibles. I am way over that amount, so my first question is do any of you use an insurance company that deals with collectibles?

Now, I have had things stolen from me more than a few times. At shows, in my storage units, with my vehicle that had some in the back and from my house or apartment over the years. When I was younger I didn't live in the best areas trying to save money because I was unwilling to go back to my mother's house or without the best credit, so that's on me. But when I have had my collectibles stolen I have had a hard time proving to the insurance company that I had the items, proving what they were worth is another obstacle, and then my not being the most organized person in the world, my last items were stolen. I had no idea what was missing, so the claim is still open while I am trying to figure out what is gone.

Now, one of my friends suggested since I sell a small amount of my items on Ebay already, that if I listed everything on Ebay, even with like 'not for sale prices' on my items I don't want to go away. That way I would have a record of it and of course, my friend is trying to help me thin out my collection as well, but I set the prices. Not that I don't have more things that I should try to sell, especially things I have multiples of.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

You should talk to your insurance agent and ask what proof is necessary in case of a loss and need to file a claim.
I'm hoping you never need the insurance.

I think there was a thread on BO about this same topic. People there mentioned this company - https://collectinsure.com/?gclid=EAI...SAAEgL2yvD_BwE - I haven’t looked into it myself yet but opened a tab on my phone as a reminder.

I use American Collectors insurance.

You need to keep an inventory and pictures of your items but that's only for your personal al records in case of a claim.

Receipts or history of transactions are helpful.
The only claim I ever made was on a damaged item that I traded for. It was covered and we used the most recent ebay sales prices to determine value.

Anything single item over $2k you need to have on file with them with personel photos and proof of value.

The first time was back in the 1980s my vehicle got stolen with stuff in it. No computer then and I didn't write anything down. Most everything was at shows for me back then, very few auctions that were not live, so I had no records to prove anything.

Last time was the beginning of this year out of my storage unit, but this time I had no idea what they took. I only knew approximately the number of boxes. I am still trying to find something missing I know for sure that is worth something that I can take to the police to see if anything was pawned around then. But the longer it takes the less likely I will catch them or see anything from it. The only things I know we're missing isn't worth anything to anyone besides me, pictures of my wife, and other personal things I had of her from when she was alive.

The problem with my insurance company is it only covers $30k, that is nothing even for me after collecting most of my life with a lot more buying and not selling that much until some more later but it still is nothing in comparison to what I have. They don't have any riders that I can add on so I have to get another company for my collectibles.

One thing I have learned about insurance companies over the years is they use their own method on everything and then you have to fight with them using your own methods and prove them wrong afterward. I can use those boards after they come up with their own number to fight them. But I would have to find more than one outlet to fight the one number they come up with.

My hope is that a collectible insurance company would understand those markets better and would give a more fair monetary offer. And if I did fight it, they would at least have someone there that understands the market and cards in general.

Thanks for the info, I have a lot of work to do to document everything one way or the other, but I need to do it. Probably take me 30 years, lol!
