Hello Jeff,
This post reminds me of why I have stopped posting on the board. MANY of us seem to have gone crazy with the posting of religion,politics, who burned who out of 10 dollars and now I must publicize his name out there on network54 so everyone knows! Come on gentleman its time to grow up. As we all know network54 is about baseball cards and memorabilia. The other topics really have no place here and almost always end up with great fights and emails flying back and forth. There are so many knowledgeable people here and many new people find this site a vast source of knowledge in the hunt to gain some information on an item that they have found . To coin a phrase WHILST Im all for any talk about world series,baseball,football,etc. stars that have passed. or anything to do with a good SPORTS story ,Leon and the other moderators should lock any posts that start to really stray from the sports theme. I believe this would bring back MANY good people who have really grown tired of the NEW network54 political board. I have been active in this hobby for the last 30+ years and I feel something needs to be done get to a little change in the climate of this board. Just my look at it.

This forum stays on topic just about as well as any internet forum out there that does not have a section for just shooting the breeze. With a presidential election coming up there are bound to be some heated debates, and as long as it's kept to one or two threads I don't see a problem with it. We are not card collecting automatons, we actually do have real human feelings. It's natural to stray off topic once in a while. I don't like to see it get as ugly as it got in the "Wife" thread though.

I do agree. The forum always gives great advice when it comes to collecting, and yes I will be the first to say that Im no automaton when it comes to any other subjects,but look what just happened when the subject was let to stray way to far! To me it just gives the board a little black eye if lets say a NEW person for the first time comes on and starts to read that post! All I am saying is when the post starts to go into the "danger"zone it should be locked . Thats all.

Dan, I'm not getting personal at all. I'm just stating that your anger towards O'Keeffe does not make him any less of a journalist or his blog any less read. And unlike you, I actually deal with New York journalists on a daily basis. And Mike O'Keeffe is a good journalist. Just because you don't like what he writes doesn't lessen that fact.

I don't see nothing wrong with this. He simply brought to light something that was happening in another Forum and bringing more attention to it. If the thread in it's own way (which started out decent enough) hadn't snowballed into a trainwreck in itself (the article basically puts under a microscope how lost some people are in the way they think), there would have been nothing to report. Was there anything to report in the first place if you really think about it? I prefer Coke over Pepsi.

I think after one poster wishing for my early demise, getting lambasted by another poster for simply editing the title after he removed it from a 90+ post thread and other assorted barbs pointed at me I'm taking a break from the forum.

I'm still trying to figure out which is more lame; contributing to and arguing on a dorky baseball card forum (as the author seems to imply), or wasting one's time reading it like a peeping tom and thinking that the rest of the world would find it a fascinating read. Just hilarious. I just hope Mark's wife doesn't read that blog or he has some serious 'splaining to do

I seem to remember so one that blew a cork to finally make it obvious of a troll on the board that was not being taken care of. This person got banned and the troll does not exist any more. Oh, the irony. Now there has been a clamoring to have another put in check with a terrible history but no action is taken because his threads get such big responses. The way this ends is ignoring this person, this doesn't happen so eventually a newspaper writes and article showing what a farce this forum has become with allowing such threads.

To me O'Keefe did nothing wrong in reporting this, it only seems to have facts in the content. It's kind of like doing something wrong and someone tells on you and you blame the person telling and make him out to be the bad guy. O'Keefe does need some knowledgable helps when reporting his card stories but at least he is interested.

As a daily lurker to this forum, and a frequent contributer to the Game Used forum (the direction my collecting went), I do have to say that things do seem to get off topic pretty quickly on this board, more so now then in the past. Dan had mentioned that most forums get off topic, however, from experience, the moderators of the GU Forum cut things off pretty quickly. Things are not allowed to get off topic much over there. That being said, I do have to admit that the way things swing on this board can be a bit more entertaining that the GU Forum.

It seems this is the first exposure to a blog for many Net54ers. Entries to blogs aren't meant to be "stories" in the newspaper sense, and they don't reflect "slow news days." They're often quick-hitters, and they often link to other stories or blogs on the Internet. And quite often, newspaper reporters maintain a blog with no extra compensation. It's not their primary "job."

So if you don't like the blog post or the author, fine. But to criticize the "story" because it doesn't fit your definition, well, you're coming off as someone who's misinformed.

I don't think very many of us take ourselves too seriously and most of us can handle a good laugh at ourselves when deserved. That said, I believe:
a) it must have been a slow news day
b) those with egg dripping off their faces because of the printing of the blog probably deserve it and
c) we all live in a very small, yet very happy, kingdom of cardboard. Unless you get out of the castle once in a while, cross the moat and experience life, you are doomed to a sad and pathetic existence.

This O'Keeffe guy needs to come to a convention sometime, hang out and share a beer or two and he'd probably have a very different perspective of card collectors. After looking at the "who are we" threads that pop up once a year in which the collectors share pictures of their families and especially their kids and grandkids, you see a group of very nice people, probably a helluva lot nicer (and kinder) than some journalists who derive pleasure and enjoyment from mockery and misfortune and have the ethical capacity of a teaspoon.
