Default Help needed identifying how many catcher pose cards are found in the 1911 Zeenuts?

Posted By: Patrick McMenemy

I need some help identifying which 1911 Zeenut cards show players in catching poses.

To date, I have confirmed that the following players are found in catching poses:

Abbott
Berry
Hogan
Kerns
Kuhn
LaLonge
Mitze
Pearce
Tiedeman
Smith, LA

Any help from PCL collectors is appreciated.

Thanks, Patrick

I have heard mention that there is a Zeenut reference book with an author by the name of Horne. I'm curious as to whether this book shows the actual cards or lists the players by position?

Thanks, Patrick

I am unable to add any poses to your listing (my 1911 collection is not too strong--I only have three cards from your list, all in low condition). The Horne publication you mentioned was issued in the late 70's by Jim Horne. It is a checklist of the various Zeenut issues with set information for each year, but I believe it only has a couple of Zeenut cards pictured on its cover.

Brian,
Is Horne's Zee-Nut guide still a worthwhile pickup or is the info outdated? I've thought about grabbing one and have seen it pop up a few times on Ebay, although I've passed on it everytime due to the price (often $100+). As a Zee-Nut collector, is it a must have or can I make due with just the Standard Catalog?

Thanks,
Zee-Novice

I do not personally believe that the Zeenut publication is worth $100+ for its checklist information alone, as both the SCD Standard Catalog and Beckett Almanac of Baseball Cards provide the same basic information. The Horne book does give you a better idea of the variations available in each year, as well as some scarcity information within some of the years, although I imagine this information has needed revision multiple times in the past 25 years. There is also a nice overview of the production and distribution of the cards, and a couple of first hand collector accounts included.

Of the two main checklist sources for Zeenuts, I find the Beckett more useful (at least the 4th edition issued around 2000 that I have) because the player's full name is listed about 99% of the time, unlike in the SCD guide where just the last name is included, and the cards are listed within each year alphabetically by team (although unfortunately these teams are not identified). Why this would be important is that many collectors collect Zeenuts just for certain players or by team. Also, the Beckett gives the collector at least a passing idea of the popularity of a player by varying the prices of the cards within a year--instead of SCD's policy of making every card but the most obvious (HOF'ers, Jim Thorpe's, etc) a common.

After double checking the thing, the Horne book, besides picturing the three Dimaggio brother cards on the cover, also has photos of 1-2 examples of each year's issue, many of these cards having coupons attached.
