Default Mr. T206 Competition!

WELCOME TO THE MR. T206 COMPETITION!!!

The T206 portraits are full of iconic images, beautiful backgrounds, great facial expressions, awesome hair do's (and don'ts), etc. This is intended to be a fun "March Madness" tournament style thread, in which our favorite T206 (portraits only!) subjects will battle it out mano-a-mano (based on polling of net54 members) for the prestigious title of "Mr. T206"!

Based on a highly scientific (OK, not really) nomination process, we have narrowed the initial field down to the following 32 subjects (in no apparent order): HOFers (16): wagner, plank, tinker, matty, wajo, cobb (green), collins, lajoie, bender, young, keeler, waddell, evers, walsh, m. brown, griffith; Non HOFers (also 16): shag, chase (pink), titus, beaumont, kling, dahlen (boston), wiltse (with or without cap???), lobert, mcintyre, merkle, dougherty, rucker, killian, magie, elberfeld, revelle. Some good ones missing, no doubt, but a strong field by any measure!

You can see the tournament bracket (randomized seedings) and follow the results here: http://challonge.com/mrt206

New match ups will be initialized as new posts, to give the thread continuity, but will also be copied here (below) to ensure the current matchup(s) are always easy to find. Subject images, for better or worse, will come from the gallery at http://www.t206resource.com, though fans (enemies) of a given subject are welcome to post their own better (worse) images. Commentary, humor, and trash talk [preferably in the matched-up players' voices] is highly encouraged!

Hope many of you will enjoy participating!

Cheers, David

--------
CURRENT MATCH:

Ladies and gentleman, we have our winner, and a fine champion it is...

Walter "The Big Train" Johnson

wins the "Mr. T206" competition, defeating the great Ty Cobb 26-11 in the finals.

Thanks to all who participated the past couple of weeks!

The final updated bracket is at: http://www.challonge.com/mrt206

Cheers, David

Desiderata

You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Strive to be happy.

Default My Nominations

I nominate my fellow Indianapolis players:

Jimmy Burke
Charley Carr
Paul Davidson
Jack Hayden (not on T206Resource.com Portrait checklist, but appears to be a portrait)

As for the bracket, don't know if it will be feasible but was wondering if it could be broken down into "regions" (like March Madness). There could be an American League, National League, Southern League, and Minor League section. That is, only American players would be in the American League section (no mixing of leagues).

Thanks,
ChiSoxFan

Ha ha, Luke, I share your enthusiasm! I think for practical reasons, however, I will try to keep it to a 32 subject bracket. Keep the nominations / seconds coming everybody, to ensure your favorites make the cut!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far with your nominations!

By my count, we have now over 70 nominated portrait subjects thus far. Of those, the following have been nominated and (at least) seconded (in no apparent order):

HOFers (16): wagner, plank, tinker, matty, wajo, cobb (green), collins, lajoie, bender, young, keeler, wadell, evers, walsh, m. brown, griffith

Non HOFers (also 16): shag, chase (pink), titus, beaumont, kling, dahlen (boston), wiltse (with or without cap???), lobert, mcintyre, merkle, dougherty, rucker, killian, magie, elberfeld, revelle

Some good ones missing, no doubt, but a strong field by any measure! Plus it is a perfect balance between HOFers and non HOFers, which was something I was hoping for... I know it will not please everybody, but Will anyone throw a fit if we just go with these 32, in the interest of simplicity?! Let me know what you guys think...

Cheers, David

OK then, it is settled, and we will go with those 32!

I have toyed briefly with seeding, but find that a randomized bracket is actually much more compelling, especially in the early rounds. So, I plan to use the bracket (still tentative) found here:

http://challonge.com/mrt206

I like this draw, as it leads to a potentially epic Wagner vs. Plank battle in the 2nd round, if they at least make it that far! I will set up and post the first matchup (tentatively: tinker vs. chase) during the football games today (er, tonight for me, as I am on Danish time...)

I plan to run about 1 matchup per day (roughly), so this will give us about a months worth of fun!

Best, David

Each new match will be initiated by a new post, which I will also copy to the first post of this thread so it is always easy to find. I will aim to run (roughly) one matchup per day, so the tournament will last approximately one month. Commentary, humor, and trash talk [preferably in the matched-up players' voices] is highly encouraged!

You can see the tournament bracket (randomized seedings) and follow the results here: http://challonge.com/mrt206

Hope many of you will enjoy participating!

Maybe this methodology should be used in Cooperstown, so we don't have to justify guys like Belanger being in Hall on the basis of statistics. My wife thinks he's cute enough.

YESTERDAY'S RESULT: In a mild upset, a handsome Chase takes down Tinker's well-styled hair 31-16! (I am calling it now, but all polls within this thread will be left open in perpetuity...)

Updated bracket found here: http://www.challonge.com/mrt206

After starting, one per day feels rather slow. So, to speed things up, I will run three today, to be followed by four per day until Round 1 is completed...

By the way, I forgot to mention that Round 1's exciting action is sponsored by:

POLAR BEAR "Is now - Always has been - Always will be - The Best Scap Tobacco"

(I always loved their slogan!)

PS - Frank, you could do far worse than this methodology (certainly could be better than the veterans committee!)...

For some reason, Eddie Plank always reminds me of Mick Jones from The Clash. Kinda has a little punk rock snarl.
