Default OT- what to do with your 1987 commons...

So last week i started making some room, putting about 1500 cards in a trash bag to toss out. I hate throwing out cards but i need room.

Rewind to last year for a minute, i had given my 6 year old son 200 cards to play with... he had no interest, cat chewed most up other crumbled, lol And the cards were tossed out in a few days.

Ok, back to last week, 1500 cards in a bag, my kid comes home for school, so before tossing them i ask, u want some cards, he says yes!

Ok great, how am i gonna get him interested and learning??

So i deside to ask him if he wants to " organize the cards" he was very excited!

We just made piles by team, and wraped each with rubber bands, he learned team names and loved it. Now every night he wants to keep "organizing the cards"

Good 1st step in teaching kids about cards ! Hope this helps anyone else with kids and some crappy 80's cards lol

I also took a few cards, rose, mcgwire, clemens, and reprinted babe ruths and put in top loders and told him these are the more special cards.

My 7 year old only ever wants what I am on the process of throwing or giving away. "Dad, you're getting rid of that?!"

That said, please don't throw baseball cards away. There are many great places to donate them to and many great kids that will appticiate them. I list mine on Craigslist and they are typically gone by the end of the day.

We always accept donations of all sorts for our Adat Chaverim show held twice a year (and yes Leon has been there and can vouch for what we do)

And we can provide tax receipts

X2, do not throw out your old/unwanted cards, donate them.

Lots of places around to do so or phone/ask a hospital, Charity, etc, to see if there is any interest in them.

I took all of mine to the children's ward at the local hospital.

There are always kids there that can use some cheering up.

I used to give all mine to a guy that teaches at a Colony school in Clark. I have not seen him for a while so have to find someone else to give them to as I have a bunch to get rid of again.

I wonder how many eggs he had to wash off his house and car the next day?

I posted what I had to give away on various trade sites like this one, asked for help with postage and got rid of them all. One batch went to a restaurant in Ohio who gives them away to kids that come in to eat with their parents.

Anyone know what to do with stacks of cards? all of the links mentioned above are dates and are no longer options

I sent a few boxes to commons4kids last year, but they no longer accept sports cards.

Mostly 80s/90sjunk era. I am either shipping them somewhere or burning them.

Try sending a PM to Tim Carroll; he might be able to use them for his artwork as shown in the link below.

Kruk's Cards buys commons from this era. Keep all the stars/variations.Some companies buy the commons @ around 1/5 a cent each. About $ 200 /100,000 cards. Best option is drop-off since shipping will be higher than the cards are worth.

this is interesting, but too much effort for me to find and buy 3200ct card boxes. I just want to throw mine in a USPS medium/large pre-paid and call it a day.

Hi Ben,
This might be a good option. There are certainly reems of hall of famers in this stash, although you should not have any illusions that there is anything of value. For example, I know this contains 360 1990 Score hockey from a box a ripped last year. Also many premium basketball from 1990-92. Also there is a ton of 1990 Leaf, Stadium Club, etc.

I am going to take a look tomorrow. I will PM you

Awesome, I only want them to look through and bring back the fond memories of players when I actually cared about current baseball. I would rather look at a pile of junk era cards than ANY other cards from any era. I couldn't care less about any value. I also couldn't list a dozen active players but could tell you a story about how I seen most of the players from the junk era play in person.

You'd be surprised at how readily the junk wax HOFers and popular players like Mattingly sell at shows, if you put them up at the right price. I moved yards of stuff like that, literally yards, at a show in August. Priced the biggest names at at buck, the rest at $0.25-$0.50 and discounted a bit over $20 spent and people just cleaned them out. Flea markets and swap meets too. I was at a flea market last month and a guy had several 3200 count boxes of cards priced right, and people were all over it. I succumbed to temptation and ended up picking through and grabbing a bunch of 1990s Michael Jordan cards I didn't have. A stack of career contemporary Michael Jordan cards for a few bucks? Why not?

I have a friend who assists several of his LCSs in pulling anything with a little value out of such lots that come in. They allow him to keep the rest, which he mostly gives away to friends. They would all be recycled otherwise. I've picked up groups of 5000 or so 1980's cards from him for the price of shipping. I send along a prepaid UPS label. It's been strangely calming to sort and go through all of these old memories even if the value isn't present. Just a walk down memory lane for the cost of shipping. Anything I can't use gets swapped, just like the old days, with no money changing hands. Hard to believe there are still lots of people collecting this stuff just for the fun of it, and even harder to believe that so much personal enjoyment has been derived from it. If I want to get away from the monetary aspect of the business, I just do a bit of this stuff for the relaxation it provides; almost an internal counter-balancing. I'll send off a package or three to people who actually have use for Johnnys Grubb and Wockenfuss, for whom these cards actually bring good feelings. I swear, it's not as strange as it sounds! Wait, yes it is. But hey, there's simply no negativity with this junk wax. Gotta love that.

I know I'd likely have interest in some similarly sized groupings of pre-1987 baseball as noted above if it was just going to be disposed of otherwise. Maybe others here would as well. I'm shortest on 1980-84 and likely have enough from 1985 & '87-89 (but don't we all?!). Perhaps people are still finding use for their earlier 80's commons. I have to admit I haven't really kept an eye on this material since the late 80's, other than when most of it came crashing down!

Your enjoyment factor far outdistanced the few dollars.
I tell people that message me looking for cards, if I don't have them, hunting for them is a lot, of not most, of the fun.

For many years, I volunteered at the Salvation Army in Dallas. I would bring sacks of junk cards for the kids up there. They loved them and it gave them something to do.

Why not?

I have a few gaps in the 83-85 sets, and some stuff I look for if I get a big batch.

Outside of the usual Topps, I have gaps in most sets. I wouldn't mind having a big batch of cards show up, especially if I could pass it along once I've gone through it.

Give them to Tim Carroll. I'm sure he could use them.

given the excellent interest in my post, I have decided to provide an itemization of what I am sending:

1) 2 opened wax boxes filled with 1990 Score Hockey, approximately 1000 cards All the Lindros, Jagr and Brodeur cards have been removed
2) One 800 count box labeled "Premium baseball: 89-92 upper deck, 91-92 stadium club, 90-93 Leaf, 92 Pinnacle. i must have consolidated this box, because it also includes 81 Fleer, 84 fleer, and 82 Donruss. I flipped through and there is an 84 fleer Sandberg/Carew/Esasky(r). The latter was a hot card at one point. in 86 there is a Gooden, Eckersley, multiple Glenn Davis rookies (also hot at one point)
3) A smaller stash of 85 and 86 fleer. Some 80s heroes included: Steve Sax, Jessie Barfield, Rafael Santana, andy van slyke
4) one 800 count box - 50% 84-86 topps and 50% early 90s basketball

Most of these are unopened boxes I ripped during Covid, all cards are essentially NM, I am sure a few Gems.

For example, I know this contains 360 1990 Score hockey from a box a ripped last year. Also many premium basketball from 1990-92. Also there is a ton of 1990 Leaf, Stadium Club, etc.

I am going to take a look tomorrow. I will PM you
The cards arrived today. Thank you very much. I will have a blast looking through them a few times. Then I will turn the box into the next size larger flat rate box with even more cards and forward them to Tim.

You could use the cards to Ukraine for soldiers to burn for heat in the trenches?
