Nice way to start the month. One of the most undervalued stars in the hobby IMO.

Not a bad way to start the month. Ruth, Cobb, Gehrig and Joe Jackson.
I've been looking for a nice lower grade green Cobb with decent eye appeal, and I finally found it.
Most came from board members - Thanks guys!!!

This popped up on eBay today. I’d never seen one before and have been looking for a nice Hornsby. After 5 panicked minutes researching prices I finally bought it. I think it was a good price. Only 8 total have been graded by PSA and SGC combined. I didn’t know this set existed before today.

Funny, I looked at that exact same card and couldn't figure out what it was. The set isn't even listed on VCP. Congrats on a nice buy - now I kind of wish I'd gone for it. Enjoy!

He's a little beat up but I'm partial to Olive background and he's tough to find decently centered.

Picked up at auction from a member consignment, wouldn't have bought it without the backstory. Thanks for the heads up Scott.

Phil,

Very nice Playball. Will you crack that out or keep it in that slab? Just curious. I assume the backstory gave you confidence in the card as it is.

I'll keep it in that slab. Scott posted the story of the card here and how he got a bunch from an old time collector long ago, cracked most of them but found this leftover recently in his collection. Funny thing is I've had this card on my list of 300 for a long time but most of the examples are OC, too brown, or off reg. I love cards like this with a story.

Most definitely, that slab has such a nice feel to it, and hell, it might be worth more than the card someday when they open a slab museum.

There's also something about cards from old time collections that I just love, they seem to have more integrity and quality. With all the trimming going on I find myself gravitating towards cards with "honest" wear on the edges.

Couple early Christmas presents for myself. Wish I pulled the trigger on a Goudey Ruth 8 months ago, but glad to have my first one in hand.

Default December Pickups

Picked up this 1910 Brown Bros. glass plate negative of Ty Cobb from Lelands last night to add to my collection. That fierce look on Cobb’s face is exactly how he played the game.

That's a great picture, but to me the look on his face says "hurry up, I would rather play ball than pose for this picture".

First Goudey pickup! A few weeks ago, when talking about all of the sports craziness, my friend casually mentioned that his great uncle had played in The Show. A few minutes later, and we were watching footage of Joe Judge playing in the '24 World Series!

Set some ebay alerts up, waited, and snagged this awesome example. Very pleased with the eye appeal, and the (MK) is a tiny little dot that doesn't detract from the card at all!

Nice pick up and great story. a nice companion piece to that card would be the 29 Kashin Joe Judge.

Joe Judge (very likely) was the role model for the Joe Hardy character in Damn Yankees.

Default S72

I picked up this S72 for my Louisiana collection. Now, I need a S74 with a Red Sun back.

A while back, we had talked about the various uses for the felt blankets. The back of this card suggests making pillow covers out of these silks.

It would take a lot of them to make a pillow cover.

Great pick-ups Mike, Jamie, Phil, DJ, Dan, Jim, Frank, and anyone else I missed. I especially love the 1953 Reese -- prettiest card extant

December pickups from Heritage, a board member (check is in mail), and Christie's (who totally screwed me out of a W600 Plank and and their consigner at least another 5-6 bids, but I will post that in the Christie's thread). Hopefully I am done for the year!
