I recently won this linen post card. The seller stated it is from the early 30's and the player swinging is Lou Gehrig. I looked around and found a few sources that identified it as such-i have links below. It also states on the back that "for nearly a decade" that ball park was used for spring training, which would mean it would have probably been printed in 1933 or 1934. My question is, is this piece period authentic from the 20's? I know there have been a wide array of fantasy pieces around so thats what worries me.

If it helps, the post card appears to be linen.

Hi-
I have one mailed from the late 1940s. In my quick research on my piece, I came to the belief it was not Gehrig, but I do not remember what brought me to this conclusion. I could see it being available in the 30s and 40s, but I highly doubt it was produced in the 1920s. Good luck in your research. Alan |

Thanks! Based on the fact that the postcard says they have been using that field for almost a decade, I also believe I can safely say it is not from the 20's. That should place the piece at 1933 at the earliest and I wouldnt be surprised if it was issued later than that- like in the 40's as you stated.

Bump-pretty sure this won't be making it into my Gehrig collection at this point but I figure i'll give it one more shot for good measure

I had originally thought that was a fantasy card because it looked somewhat similar to these fake Ruth postcards (where Ruth's picture is in an oval) (Link). However, since another poster has said that he has that postcard w/ a postmark from the 1940s, it does look like it's vintage, but just not sure who the player is. Sorry, can't add any more than that.

To me, it almost looks more like Dimaggio than Gehrig, but I am not really good with player identifications.

Just ran across this today...the pic is very close to identical in the circle
Describe: 1936 NATIONAL CHICLE FINE PENS JOE DiMAGGIO SGC 20 ROOKIE YEAR RARE. Extremely scarce Rookie year issue of "The Yankee Clipper". DiMaggio made his debut for the Yankees in May of 1936 and lead the Bronx Bombers to 9 World Series titles over the next 13 years. The present offering shows a young Joe D in a classic follow-through with the catcher and umpire looking on. Ebay link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1936-NATIONA...item2a2b1c5aa9

I don't know if it's Gehrig, but it is sold that way all the time.

It's a shot from a similar angle, but the guy on the postcard is clearly a lefty!

It took me a while on this one but I think I might have a match. How does it look? For better clarity on the picture, here is a link http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lou-Gehrig-N...item20d654f597

At first, I saw a resemblance to Gehrig, especially the head, but wasn't certain it was Gehrig. With the last photo posted, I do believe it is Gehrig.

I do also- the positioning of the fence is what really made me realize I finally got it. Thanks for your help, I always liked the colors of this piece so im very happy I can finally add it to my Gehrig collection.

Hello! I've been getting into baseball postcards more lately and stumbled on this again (5 years later) in my collection while going through other postcards and wanted to ask before discarding it..
It looks to be a postcard of Lou Gehrig (bottom picture) and wanted to know - what characteristics of the it established this as a 1940's (junk?) postcard rather than a possible 'playing days' issue. I'm not too great with postcard stock or color so I think it probably relates to that but wanted to know more precisely how to age it. Thanks again! -Frank Last edited by frankh8147; 12-18-2018 at 01:52 PM. |

I like the postcards and both look original to me (from the pics on the screen). I am not sure what the question is though?
![]() .Ok, I think I see the question now. I would need to date the stamp mark but I think it could be early-mid 1930s based on the timing of the Yankees practicing there.

I do not believe there is any way the postcard is from the 20's, but I do believe it is very likely from the 1934 time period. I also believe it is likely to be Gehrig.
Below is a brochure promoting St Pete from 1934 and the Yankees along with Gehrig specifically, is used as part of their promotion. It would serve to reason that St Pete would also make postcards to sell around the same time frame. I don't have one in my collection as there always seems to be something else I want to buy when one comes up for sale. LOL ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the replies! I see how my post could be a little confusing considering I started this topic 5 years ago and decided to revisit it now.
I have seen this postcard dated to around 1934 online but never saw any evidence behind it, so thank you;those are some really cool pieces you have! -Frank |

I did not see it when you first posted it as I don't read the card side as much.
Looking at the postcard, the player looks skinny, but the pose is really familiar. That along with the brochure makes me feel pretty comfortable with a mid 30's dating, but until we find on mailed we won't know fir sure

It’s definitely Gehrig. I saved an image I found online that is a perfect match. I also had it dated as 1937.
