1933 Goudey #53 Babe Ruth vs 1934 "Canadian Goudey" WWG #28 Babe Ruth

Hey fellas,

Brand new member and first time post. I recently acquired a 1934 WWG #28 Babe Ruth SGC 70. It's a beautiful card and the centerpiece to my collection. On the back, the print is in English and French. I have been told that the "Canadian Goudey's" are more scarce than the 1933 Goudey's, especially with the backs that are in bilingual. My question is, other than the fact that they were made in Canada, why do the "Canadian Goudey's" if in fact more "scarce", fall just short versus the '33's in popularity and price? Just curious what your thoughts might be... Looking forward to being a member!

Just the way it is. Goudey is the mainstream issue and a cornerstone of the hobby, World Wide Gum considered a variant.

Many more rare / scarce cards don't bring higher prices...

For example, there are several of Wagner's cards that are certainly more scarce than his T206 card... E107, Voskamps, T216 MINO, to name a few, but all of them pale in price comparison to the T206 cornerstone.

Welcome to the forum!
I've long considered that part of the valuation discrepancy between WWGs and Goudeys also has to do with it being a foreign version of a set where a US issue is available. Players like Ruth and Gehrig are parts of US history and as such, when given the option of basically the same card, save for one being "made in the USA" and the other a "foreign product", folks prefer the US version.

Think of it as an opportunity to build a great looking set in a slightly more cost effective manner. You won't get into as many bidding wars and still enjoy the beauty of the cards. Good hunting,

First of all Welcome to the board!!! It's great to have new members chiming in. In answer to your question, to me, it's a very, very easy answer. Economics 101, Supply vs Demand. There is more demand, even with the greater amount of American Goudeys, than their Canadian counterparts. That is the reason they cost more. regards

Just for clarification, the 34 WWG set only comes with the French/English back.
It is the 33 WWG set that comes with both French/English and English only backs, and in this set the English only back is significantly scarcer than the French/English back.

I just picked up this '33 WWG, English-only Ruth, and found this thread while researching.

My questioned concerned relative scarcity between the '33 Goudey, '33 WWG English-only, and '33 WWG French/English. Do we have any percentages guesses?

I'll answer my own question, just in case anyone's reading this with interest, but without an answer But this doesn't break the WWG's down by 'English only vs both'.

I think you can compare this to modern day Topps vs O-Pee-Chee. Even though O-Pee-Chee is scarcer, collectors still prefer Topps (except in some instances for hockey).
