Default What is your "White Whale"?

What is your "white whale"?

My white whale is a 1956 parkhurst football card #33 of calvin jones. calvin was from my home town, steubenville, ohio. calvin played football at the university of iowa, from 1953 to 1955, and was an all-american. he was the winner of the 1955 outland trophy, the first african-american. he also appeared on the 7th issue of sports illustrated. calvin was tragically killed in an airplane crash on december 9th, 1956 returning from the canadian football league all-star game. the university of iowa dedicated their 1957 rose bowl game victory to calvin and his number 62 is one of two numbers retired by the university, the other being nile kinnick. if there is someone out there willing to sell this card please contact me.

thanks rich

This cabinet photo has been eluding me for years...sorry it's so small, but that's the only scan of it I have.

Also looking for this postcard as it is the only commercial Nebraska Indian postcard that I know of that I don't have....I do know of a rppc of the team, but the owner wants too much for it.

Simple Boston Store Joe Jackson. Fills a hole in my Jackson and Boston Store sets. Not many in the popular reports and haven't seen one for sale in the last 3-5 years.

Default Boston Store Joe...

James - I saw a Boston Store Joe at the National. (I don't remember where, but I remember it like it was yesterday, as I noticed the black jersey & Pants) This card was in vg or vg-ex best of my recollection residing in a PSA Holder. It may have been a display for an upcoming auction with one of the big auction houses... (Stay tuned)

I actually made a mental note to self to pick one up down the road! It is an attractive card for sure.

Best of Luck,

Jeremy

E107 Noodles Hahn....last one needed to complete "no no" set... well from 1900 on, and one more less on the 20 win set.

Edited to add found an earlier M101-1

Amen Bob on that Halla. I missed out on at least three of them over the last few years that were priced relatively reasonably. Best looking pre-war card of all time...IMHO.

An affordable 1869 Cincinnati Reds Peck and Snyder. And no, $20,000 is NOT affordable! Maybe for a new car, but not for a piece of cardboard. Not yet, anyway.

Default Autographed Ty Cobb

I'd consider trading my T206 Eddie Plank for a pre-WWI autographed Ty Cobb card.

Default My white whale(s)

My white whales are from the 1912 Zeenut set: Boles and Berry.

I have only seen a few and the condition has been off on them. I'm hoping a nice example of each surfaces some day, but for now, I wait!

Call me Ahab. Patrick, but the quest for the white whale should be all consuming, and the words "I can wait" will never appear on the quest

Nice thread. My white whale is relatively humble, but a serious pain in the butt to find: T206 Joe Tinker, bat off, American Beauty 460.

It would be interesting to find out how many white whales were found since this thread was started a decade ago.

For my players from Oklahoma collection, my white whale is a type I photo of Bullet Joe Rogan or anything from his playing days. I don't want to use the 1974 Laughlin Black Stars as my card for Joe.
