Good so far, guys.

I still lack a couple of Burr McIntosh's... I kept trying for a McGinnity, had a helluva time getting one. I'd get outbid. I'd call just after one sold. One of those Old Cardboard rascals outbid me on one on eBay, I think... I finally got one!!

Van Robays was attributed for naming the Eephus pitch, that thing that Ted Williams slammed outa the park (like Rhett did IDing) in the 1946 All Star Game. In 1942 Reporters, after a game, were asking what the pitch was, Pitcher Rip Sewell didn't respond, Van Robays said it was an Eephus Pitch. The reporters asked what that was, and Van Robays said an Eephus ain't nothing, and that's what that pitch was. The name stuck.

Yikes!!!!

Truthfully, I figured anyone who put down Schoendienst either knew how to spell it, or looked it up. I now see you did neither. But you knew who he was. I didn't notice the misspelling. I used to have a helluva time with it, so I sat down and learned it.


I think I'm going to work on this photo card ID thing and come up with some sort of Master Card Identifier award.

Born in Germantown, Illinois of German ancestry....the German translation of his name is...."beautiful servant".

I met him in Cooperstown several years ago (he was 80 at the time) and he looked like he could still trot out
to 2nd base and play BB.

A wonderful guy to chat with, and a very humble man.

Frank, I am sure you know this, being a Cardinals fan......some of the nicest BB players that I have met and
chatted with are......

Johnny Mize (my favorite....I visited him at his home in Demorest, GA)

Ted, your Yankee prejudice shows, thinking Mize the nicest.

I've seen Mr. Musial in person, he seemed very nice. I wrote him and got him to sign a frame mat, that I was putting around a Musial Exhibit card. He personalized it to my Dad for his birthday. Dad was quite impressed with it, having listened to Cardinals games on the radio in the 40s.

I've spoken with Mr. Schoendienst. A really nice man. And he has to be way up there among folks who've seen the most ballgames.

Never met Mize or Slaughter, but Slaughter seems grateful to have been given a chance to play in the majors.

I've heard Mr. White is a very thoughtful, intelligent fellow. I'd love to meet him. I remember laying in the floor in 1964, listening to games on the radio, through the static. Bill White could put the hurt on the ball.

More info...

McGinnity is from the Oct 1903 Burr-McIntosh Monthly Magazine (There is also a NY NL Team picture in same issue)

The Schoendienst is from an issue called PC755 "Dear Friend" Postcards and looks to be from the 1951-52 series (if it has a Sportsman Park Address on the back)

Yes, my Yankees favoritism reveals itself when I talk about Johnny Mize.

I first met him at a NJ BB card show in 1981. I was set-up at the show and Big John was sitting at the adjacent
booth signing his autograph for the public. During our idle moments we struck up quite a conversation.

I reminisced with him about the 1952 World Series where he single-handedly beat the Dodgers with 3 game win-
ning HR's and a would be 4th HR that Carl Furillo leaped into the RF stands to catch it.

Five years later we stopped in Demorest, GA (driving to FLA) and I had a really nice visit with Johnny. John was
quite an independent spirit in his BB playing days. I asked him why the Cardinals, and then the Giants traded him
when he was playing at his peak performance ? He said that they wouldn't meet his salary demands, so he asked
to be traded.
I recall like it was just yesterday, when the Yankees acquired Mize from the Giants on Aug 19, 1949. As a 10-year
old, I was very excited, as I recalled that the year before he hit 51 HR's. Mize (on and off the field) contributed
greatly to the 1949-53 "dynasty" years of the Yankees.


Bill White....
I loved to listen to Bill announcing the Yankees games with Phil Rizzuto. I met Bill at a Show in Asbury Park, NJ
in 1990. I waited till the end of his signing session so I could talk with him. We had a great conversation and I'll
never forget as we were parting....he stood up offered me his hand and thanked me for a very pleasant conver-
sation....what a fine gentleman.

Years later at the Cooperstown Show, two gals in their early 20's were at my table asking me for Bill White BB
cards. We started a conversation, and I soon realized they were Bill White's Daughters. They were such a de-
light to talk with.

fkw... How have you become so wise in the ways of Burr McIntosh??

I lack 2, I think. I have a couple of spares, too.

As best as I can tell, McGinnity is the only individual major leaguer depicted.

One of the Old Cardboard guys asked me about putting together a list / article about them. But then he outbid me on a McGinnity, so I decided to not be helping him with info... maybe I've mellowed from that and might tackle it. Do you have the dates on all of them?? The one of the New York Giants looks great!!


The Schoendienst I put up has the Bush Stadium address, and a 1954 postmark. I have another with a portrait shot of Schoendienst, the Sportsman's Park address, and a 1952 postmark, but it has some cellophane tape residue on the front.

TED, I only heard snippets of Bill White in the broadcast booth. I have a recollection of a family photo of him, with daughers, in the 64 or 65 Cardinal yearbook. I think the 64 one. So you just walk up and talk to Johnny Mize... you're the man!

I dont have a big collection now, but Ive owned most of these items in the past. I used to be a big (low grade) "type card" collector but always a poor one (no $) so Im always selling my good stuff to pay bills and take gold diggers on exotic trips

also Just bought my first home (solar jungle cabin with no internet or tv) so not buying many cards nowadays..... until I actually find a "good" job here (fat chance) where there is no jobs besides growing pakalolo like all my kook neighbors.
