Default 1961 and 1962 Baltimore Orioles Team Issue Brooks Robinson

Day 310 – 6 November 2024
Today I am showing you the 1961 and 1962 Team Issued Stadium 5x7 photos. The 1961 is ungraded while the 1962 is graded. The 1962 photo according to PSA is referred to as “Sports Service.” Both sets include 12 player photos. I would like to find another Brooks for both sets if anyone has an extra.

Very happy to add a PSA 7 copy of El Tiante's 1965 Topps RC to my collection as he's named to the HOF ballot. It will be bittersweet if he is finally elected so soon after his passing, but great pitcher, great card, and great character!

A Look At The 1965 Topps Luis Tiant Rookie Card

It was reported today that former Orioles LHP Don Ferrarese has passed away. Don pitched in 50 games with the Orioles from 1955-1958 (5-11 record) as well as being one of Brooks Robinson's roommates...

Also was the 4th oldest living Oriole at the time of his death (95 years old)

RIP Don:

Default 1964 and 1965 Baltimore Orioles Team Issue Brooks Robinson

Day 313 – 9 November 2024
Today, I am showing you the 1964 Stadium Team Issue and 1965 Stadium Team Issue photos of Brooks Robinson. Both sets include 12 different players and the photos are completely different between the two years. I am looking for an extra of Brooks in each year if anyone has one. I am missing the 1963 Stadium Team Issue Photos which includes 12 players (two players appear with different cropping). If anyone has this set or the Brooks photo, please keep me in mind.

I thought to show some of my signs. The signs are mostly from Memorial Stadium telling you what section you are in. The larger sign top left hung on a memorial stadium directional sign. On the reverse side is a Colt emblem for the football season. The exit sign is from Memorial Stadium. The “336” sign is from OPACY. I really like the bottom “SEC 37 BB-2” sign from Memorial Stadium.
In 2022 I lent the Orioles some pieces for their Camden Yards 30th Anniversary display cases and as a 'thank you' they gave me one of the special logo signs...

Bill, very cool. I always enjoy those displays. I was thinking about approaching the Orioles about Brooks Locker. The way they have it decked out is not that impressive. Recently I noticed they moved the locker closer to the elevators near the trophies. It is not celebrated at all. Thanks for sharing.

I can't picture what the locker looks like off the top of my head, but from what I understand their next big celebration (other than the 30th Anniv. of 2131) will be in 2029 (75th Anniversary)..

I'm sure people who have been to Camden Yards (or Ed Smith Stadium) are familiar with these signs:

Default 1964 McNally and 1965 Palmer

Bought these as part of a group of Orioles Team issue postcards. I know the Palmer is scarce so wanted it encased. I listed each card as Team issued postcard and noted Year, but PSA just put Print on flip? Anyway happy they are protected.

Jonathan,

Nice looking postcards. I have a quick question about the Jim Palmer. I think your Palmer might be from 1966, not 1965. The Orioles used the same photo both years, but there's a couple differences.

In 1965, the postcards were 3 1/4" x 5 1/2". The 1966 postcards are 1/4" shorter, 3 1/4" x 5 1/4". Also, the gap above Palmer's hat is a little larger on the 1965. Does your Palmer have a postmark on back?

Your Palmer looks like one of my 1966 Palmer postcards, but could be a new 1965 variation.

Here's my 1965 and two 1966 Jim Palmer postcards for comparison.

I noticed that the amount of sleeve piping (is that piping?) visible in the lower right corner is also slightly different between the two years.

Default 1967 Dexter Press Brooks Robinson

Day 319 – 15 November 2024
Today, I am showing you the 1967 Dexter Press Photos. On the left, you will see a PSA 8 Premium All Star version. The one on the right is part of the Orioles Set. I honestly do not know the difference between the two photos. The front and back are the same from what I can tell.

The backs have a different write up. The all star I think is much shorter write up. I you don’t see any difference it maybe mislabeled by PSA.

Default Brooks Robinson Baltimore Orioles Advocate Photo

Day 320 – 16 November 2024
I found this photo many years ago from the Orioles Advocates celebrating Brooks Robinson’s Hall of Fame induction. It was given out at the Orioles Advocates 23rd Anniversary Banquet on November 5, 1983. The photo shows Brooks in his famous pink sports jacket during his HoF induction ceremony.

Day 321 – 17 November 2024
Today’s photo is from 1965. Not sure if it is a Type 1 or 2 photo. The back of the photo describes Brooks 1964 MVP season last year and later describes the Orioles opening a series with the Angles on September 17, which again appears to be 1965. What a great photo of Brooks.

Default Brooks Robinson photo with Rob Menchine

Day 322 – 18 November 2024
Today is another photo of Brooks Robinson with Baltimore Radio TV personality Ron Menchine. This photo is from the late 1960s. Brooks seems preoccupied with something in front of him while being interviewed. Menchine worked with the Orioles in the 1960s through 1971.

Today, I am showing you a photo of Brooks Robinson mastering the art of blowing a bubble. Again, not sure if this is a Type 2 or press photo. On the back the photo refers to Brooks as a Hall of Famer and has a stamp from the United Press International. It has a 67 on top left.

Measured the Palmer 5 1/4 x 3 1/4 But the back is blank no postmark. The McNally is 5 1/2 but I was told it was a 1964. Also blank backed. I won them as part of a large group on Ebay maybe 6 weeks ago. That was one of 4 or 5 Groups of a large collection of Baltimore team issues. The other I will see if any of the other 1965 cards are from players that could only be 65..

PS Love the Johnny pro Brooks. It brings back memories of my first show in MD. I think Nick Schoff ran it. Met alot of collectors at that show.

Jonathan,

That makes sense. That would make the Palmer a 1966 issue. I only asked about the postmark, as many were mailed out to fans and a postmark on the back usually helps id the year. The McNally is from 1964. Both the 1964 and 1965 O's postcards are 5 1/2". The Orioles reduced the size to 5 1/4" in 1966. Most of the 1965 and 1966 O's postcards use the same photo.

Let me know if you have any for sale/trade. I'm missing a few from 1964.

Leaving the team issue and Jay Publishing behind, today I am showing you the 1973 Johnny Pro Stand Up Cards of Brooks Robinson. The set includes 25 different cards. Three players have 2 variation cards (Brooks, Palmer and Grich). My two Brooks Robinson cards (fielding and batting) are high graded (PSA 8 and 9).

Johnny Pro is a nice set. Especially like the two Variations of Brooks. Not easy to find in high quality. It has a nice selection of our stars from the past. Hard to believe they are over 50 years old.

Day 328 – 23 November 2024
Today I am showing you some of my J.D. McCarthy post cards. I have a few non-Orioles but my focus is to gather all the Baltimore Orioles from this set. I have 3 of the Frank Robinson’s and a signed and unsigned Brooks Robinson. I am missing a few variations (Dalmyple, Drabowski, Northrup, Pappas). I am missing Brandt, Heard, Held, Probus, Stephens, Triandos, and Wilhelm. If anyone wants to trade for a Frank Robinson for any above, keep me in mind.

Today is another photo of Brooks Robinson with Baltimore Radio TV personality Ron Menchine. This photo is from the late 1960s. Brooks seems preoccupied with something in front of him while being interviewed. Menchine worked with the Orioles in the 1960s through 1971.
I was fortunate to become an acquaintance of Ron in the early 90's & found him to be an interesting guy. He had a fantastic collection (which is a story into itself) but specialized in postcards (eventually writing a book on the subject).

One minor correction I'd make is that Ron was the voice of the Washington Senators from '69 thru '71 (he was on the air during their final game when they had to forfeit due to fans storming the field in the 9th inning)...

Charlie,

I really like the MCCarthy postcards. I believe I have all the known Orioles & variations (31 total). By far, the two hardest to find are the Jehosie Heard and Milt Pappas (squatting) postcards. Good luck.

Here's the 31 known Orioles JD McCarthy postcards includes an extra Pappas

Default 1982 Cracker Jack Old Timer Game

Day 329 – 24 November 2024
Back on 15 January 2024, I provided some details about the First Annual Cracker Jack Old Timers Baseball Game at RFK Memorial Stadium, Washington, D.C. on Monday, July 19, 1982 at 8:00 PM. I showed you a poster, Program and Brooks Sheet from the 82 card set included. Recently, I found the ticket, newspaper clipping of Brooks Robinson and the box score. It appears Brooks went 1 for 1. Below is a picture of these things. Pretty cool.

Charlie...I nearly bid on that stub/clippings myself (happy you got it).

Speaking of eBay, on a whim a week or so ago I bid on this 1964 Orioles/Red Sox game used baseball, just because I thought it was neat (and the price was right).

Brooks went 1 for 1 with a double and three walks while Milt Pappas was the Winning Pitcher (pitching all nine innings):

Picked the jersey up in the early 90’s (believe it was ‘91) from a former Brooks collector that was basically selling his collection which included this jersey.

If Brooks is wearing B&W Pony cleats I have those as well (Page 35).

Default Brooks Robinson Bobbleheads and Statues

Day 330 – 25 November 2024
I have shown some of my Brooks Robinson and Baltimore Oriole Bobbleheads, Statutes and Figurines in the past. Today I thought I would show them as best I can all together. It will not be perfect but will try. One of the pictures below is all of them together in my cabinet my wife refinished for me from our dining room when we were first married. There are four photos of the Brooks Bobbleheads, statutes and figurines. I will also show the Legend Lives statute, Baltimore Orioles 1970 Danbury Mint team figurine set and 3 foot bobblehead separately. I believe in total I have 43 items with Brooks. I know there are a few more out there but this is a decent collection or depiction of what to chase, if interested.

Very nice setup. Really like the cabinet used to display. I try to collect most of the Brooks bobbleheads, but I’m missing quite a few.
