Vintage Store Model Bats.. Lets see your rare ones!
Posted By: Matt Hart
Clint posted a toughie the other day, so lets see your rare store model bats. Here's a pair of Ruth and Gehrig Japanese bats. I know there is another Gehrig out there, but it's the only Ruth I've seen. |

The first is my Zenith decal bat. The decal is the common PROFESSIONAL seen on many models, but the label is fairly scarce. |

Vintage Store Model Bats.. Lets see your rare ones!

I was wondering if someone could help me out since I don't know too much about old baseball bats I have a old Spalding bat and I don't know if it is professional model or a store model. The bat looks just like the famous black betsy Joe Jackson bat its weight 39.5 ounces and length 34 inches are also almost identical. It is a Old Hickory Spalding model 156 and that is all it says on it. The bottom of the knob has the Spalding trademark stamped in with a nail in the handle. The bat has been dated pre 1920 and that is all the information I have on it. If anyone has opinions or information on this bat I would really appreciate it thanks, Rich |

The Old Hickory is a nice looking bat. Mears graded with the same specs and model number as yours and determined it was a post 1920 bat based on the model number. For a generic bat to be linked to a star like Joe Jackson, there would have to be a lot of information to validate it. The Old Hickory was a generic bat offered from the company. While on the topic, even the Joe Jackson Old Hickory that was deemed authentic, in my opinion is a questionable bat. Your bat is a most likely a store model, but still has some value. |

Hey, thanks for the info on the Spalding Old Hickory. One more question how much of a value could one of these bats be worth? If anybody would be interested in this bat I could send them a couple of scans. |

Great bats fellas. I've taken quite a liking to early, oddly shaped bats so dont really have many store models. This Spalding black tip is actually the only bat I own with a brand name. |

Great bats everyone. Matt I like that Gehrig because it looks so much like the Spalding bats of that period. |

Thanks guys. Mike the Goldsmith knob is like a ball where the D&M looks more like an acorn. In this picture you can see the ball knob, mushroom, double knob and the acorn knob or semi-mushroom. |
