Late 19th century and early 20th century programs are
extraordinary works of art...not to mention important
links in the history our National Pastime.

We are interested to learn about exeptionally rare programs
and how you acquired them

Our favorite three are:

1890 Brooklyn Four Color Players League Program- won in a major book auction
1901 Milwaukee American League - acquired privately from Tom Slater
1914 Baltimore Federal League Program- Mastro Auction.

What's in your collection?

How about these two?

Only known 1904 Highlanders (Yankees) program from Jack Chesbro's "wild pitch" game, 10 October 1904.

Yankee Stadium opener, 18 April 1923.

Bruce,

I think a lot of the guys on here have shown a lot of their collections quite generously.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't ever remember you posting a picture of anything.

Why don't you show us something from your collection before asking others to do so?

Happy New Year

Greg

And just which books would those be?

Couldn't the Dorskinds post just one little itty-bitty picture?

Someone once posted a little 5 minute video which had Bruce showing off some of his collection...there was some pretty rare items shown and Bruce never once uttered "Whilst".

Whilst we appreciate your interest, we don't care for the sarcastic remarks,
We do not post any items from our collection for both insurance and logistical reasons.

Our scanner is not able us to communicate directly with the Board's posting mechanism

In the past we have sent a select few items to Leon.

We own some a cadre of ultra rare programs ..some of which are currently
on loan to several museums.

Bruce, someone needs to show you how to scan and post your items to a website like Photobucket. Once there you can put that image up on the Net54 without a problem. You can also store all those pics on there without having to worry about fire because the pics aren't stored on your computer or on a disc they are always available on the net. You can also choose to keep them private.

We're not really interested, Bruces. We just thought a little reciprocity might be in order.

And if you're afraid to show items from your collection for "both insurance and logistical reasons," (whatever the hell that means), don't ask anyone else to show theirs.

Bruce,

I don't believe my remark was in any way, shape, or form, "sarcastic." On the contrary, it was a very sincere statement.

Quite frankly, to ask other people to post pictures of their posessions and refusing to do the same
because, and I quote, "We do not post any items from our collection for both insurance and logistical reasons" is probably the most pompous statement I've heard on the memorabilia side. You've got to be freaking kidding me. What makes you any better than the rest of us?

This is a good group of guys (and girl) over here who SHARE quite openly. I don't think there's one guy (or girl) on here I wouldn't want to share a beer with, or talk sports and sports memorabilia.

Truth be said, and I'm not afraid to admit this, I find your attitude very insulting most of the time. Mind you, it's not because I feel "below" your credentials in any manner. I'm tired of the attitude that the only things in this world that hold any value are the ones that are worth money. I don't mean for this remarks to be an attack on you. I just want you to think a bit about what I'm trying to say.

As far as collections...

Quite honestly, I couldn't give a rat's behind what something is "worth" in terms of monetary value. All of this stuff on here has some value to each and every one of us. Some of it is ultra rare, some of it is not. There isn't a soul on this side who puts the cash before the pride he or she has in sharing an object with others. There's always something that someone finds appealing or historically significant. Personally, I get a kick out of learning about new things. Before this board, I never even heard of the Nebraska Indians. Now I find it fascinating each and every time a new piece is found.

I recently posted a Narragansett Scorekeeper from 1910 for the Providence Grays. What is it worth? I couldn't care less. All I know is that it's probably the only one known of it's kind that still exists. It doesn't sit in a museum, it's not loaned out to anyone, it's here for anyone to see it if they care to. Should it be in a museum? Probably. It's a heck of a lot rarer than any Honus Wagner card. Why isnt' it in a museum? Because it only appeals to a small number of people.

Anyway, I'm certainly not interested in getting into a cat fight over this nonsense. Just think over what I've said. Life's too short.

Why does Dicken's Christmas Carol keep popping into my mind?

Happy New Year, Bruce. I hope you understand where I'm coming from.

Greg

Greg, don't waste your time and don't take Bruce so seriously. Bruce is ridiculously pompous and seemingly suffers from a host of issues which make his socialization skills less than ideal, and frankly, quite comical. I think Bruce's OP was more or less an attempt at making friends -- he just hasn't quite learned the art of being "pleasant". (And his use of the royal "we" is just the starting point.)

Oh, and if anyone has received derogatory and/or threatening private e-mails from Bruce (a staple of his failed attemtps at socialization) as a result of of this thread, alert leon. Bruce was warned about such behavior and can be made to go away.

It appears that no one within the Dorskind Group has mastered this newfangled Interweb thing. (Or correct grammar, while we're at it.)

For what it's worth, Bruce(s), scanners don't "communicate directly" with posting mechanisms. If you're going to shovel it, at least know what you're shoveling.

Can anybody explain to me what that really means? A scanner "communicates" with your PC. I am unaware of any PC that cannot "communicate" with the Net54 posting mechanism.

Bruce, serious question here....wouldn't you rather make friends than be so obtusive?

Before I found this board I used to see your ads for the World's Toughest Wantlist and think that this guy must have an unbelievable collection...then you started posting to the Net54 and right from the start you showed yourself to be very arrogant and I'm afraid it's probably cost you many potential friends and trading partners.

Here is a really early Yankees Ticket for you New York guys. Farrell was president of the Yankees from 1904-09 and this was found in a 1904 scrapbook so I am pretty sure that is the year this dates from

I picked up this 1906 scorecard on eBay. It's a game between Portland, MN and Lynn, MA. Thankfully, the seller made a nice scan of the inside of the scorecard, which allowed me to discover Eddie Grant was playing in the game. Grant, who made his major league debut later the same season, only played a few games for Lynn. He graduated from Harvard earlier during the same season. Since I collect Grant stuff, this was a real find for me. By the way, I believe that's Harry Lord leading off for Portland ...

1905 New York Giants scorecard.
Picturing National League champs of 1904, Matty, McGraw and the crew.
The game was against the Cubs with Matty, Tinker and Chance in the lineup!
I have a number of scorecards from the teens but this one stands out as the best I have.

Great programs guys.

David, I can only see your Yankees program in your first post, the others are red x's on my end. Is that something with my settings on my computer? I know Jeff responded after seeing the one image and it's frustrating not to be able to see it also.

Any help would be appreciated.

RC

Edited to say: OK, now they're showing up. Sometimes computers drive me crazy.

Here are a couple for Greg's viewing pleasure. Rare 1918 regular season red sox program and a very very rare 1918 Babe Ruth "Barnstorming Program" that took place right after the 1918 World Series. Ruth pitched in this game! Only one I have ever seen. Also came with a newspaper article that before the game they auctioned off a ball Ruth hit for a triple in the world series and a bat used by Ty Cobb. Proceeds of the auction went to support local Hartford residents serving in Europe in World War I.

Pat.... Awesome Programs! Did any of those come from the Hunt Live Auction about 5-6 years ago? I recall seeing similar examples all offered together at this event (the only time I actually made the trek to PA).

It was amazing to see these all displayed "live". Really love that one with the cartoonish Jennings featured on the cover!

Some great looking score cards. While I don't collect Detroit Tiger items (too new), I sure do like those earlier copies. Very nice.

Here are a pair of Detroit Wolverine vs Boston Beaneaters scorecards from July 13th & 14th, 1887. Detroit's Pretzel Getzien would lose to Madden on the 13th (4 to 12) but Larry Twitchell would better Radbourn on the 14th (7 to 4) keeping the Wolverines ahead of the pack. The Wolverines would go on to hold 1st place from the start to end of the season, a National League first.

July 13th, 1887 (full scans)

July 14th, 1887 (front cover only)

Best Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

" And how many fans know that Ruth didn't entirely desert pitching during his 15 seasons (1920-1934) with the Yankees but made five appearances in all of which he was the winner?

His last showing was the most noteworthy, coming in 1933, the same year in which he added to his legend by hitting the first home run in the first major league All-Star Game at Comiskey Park in Chicago.

On October 1, 1933, with the Yankees out of contention, an aging Ruth, approaching 40, slow, fat and hobbled by aches and pains, agreed to start the last game of the season on the mound against the Boston Red Sox.

It was no masterpiece, Ruth giving up 12 hits and walking three, but he went all the way and hit a home run to provide the margin in a 6-5 Yankees victory before a supportive crowd 20,000, many of whom turned out just to watch him pitch.

"I had such a sore arm I had to eat with my right arm for a week," Ruth said later.

It may not have been Ruth's finest hour, but his last pitching appearance is well worth recalling as displaying his undiminished determination in the face of fading talent.

Ruth's modest final mound triumph and Baylor's singular embarrassment on the basepaths are just two of the achievements and records that warrant a better fate than the total neglect to which so many have been relegated."

My favorite is my 1887 Detroit vs St. Louis World Series program. It has been restored but what a piece of history. Any idea of how many of these exist ? Note: I have little tech skills. How do I use photobucket ? Is this the only way to get a photo on here ? I'll need step by step and then I'll have son do it. Thanks Mike
