Default Did I overpay at the National? Vintage catchers mask and fielders glove

Just returned from Atlantic City and, among my card purchases, I picked up 2 really cool looking items that I know nothing about and am guessing that I overpaid….

Not a biggie - but thought I’d ask here. I paid $310 for this catchers mask (Spaulding, 1920’s I was told) and $150 this Mel Ott style glove

Did I get hosed a bit? A lot?

It’s ok… I still think they will look very cool in my Card Cave!

Jeff

Yes, you paid “dealer pricing”, but honestly you did not do too badly. Those items will display nicely and appear to be in very nice condition.

That 1930s “circular spitter” Spalding Mask is somewhat rare and a desired style. If you can find one with all padding still in-tact, and with a complete head strap, you’ve done well. If it has no ink writing and no rips/tears to the leather, it’s icing on the cake.

Mel Ott was a pretty common endorser of gloves back then, but you didn’t overpay much, if at all. He is a mega HOFer, and the glove (while not rare) still looks nice. Those buckle-back designs are cool and yours is in nice condition with original lacing and no real flaws. A couple of great scores, if you ask me!

Default Nice pickups

Overpay is a funny word. If you bought them to “flip” immediately you paid pretty strong but if you like them for your own collection then you did nicely. There is value in both items….. you did not get hosed!! Congrats!!

I don't collect masks, but that is an awesome style! My mother told me, if you've never seen it and you want it, the price is what you're willing to pay. I'm glad you came home happy.

Ah, your feedback makes me happy! These were purchased to be “mine all mine!” - no intention to flip at all.

Yes, the 2 dealers were totally lovely and the purchase experience was a really nice one (as compared to some really cranky card dealers… but I’ll leave that to another section of net55 &#129315

I totally dig my new vintage equipment - will be fun to decide where and how to hang them in my card cave for maximum exposure!

Thx again for the feedback - I know cards well and there certainly was a “national” premium on most cards. But as long as I didn’t pay double or more for these 2 items, I have zero regrets

I’ll repost an image once I decide where and how to put them in my card cave…. Thx again

Jeff

You overpay and underpay in this crazy hobby - the prices you posted don’t seem egregious…..you went to the National - that’s more than most of us can say….enjoy the moment - enjoy the purchases and don’t worry about the prices…..they are beautiful - especially the mask…

Most “Spitter Masks” had a diamond shaped hole, but the circular ones command a slight premium, as does any collectible that’s rarer. For the record, lots of memorabilia and equipment collectors have them.

For the “card guys” that don’t get it or find it amusing, think of it as you would a T206 with an “Old Mill” or “Cycle” back.
