to figure out how the Cobb/Cobb was distributed, when all the while it was in a lousy Piedmont pack.

I cannot decide who is the dumber one, the high bidder at over $1800 for this Piedmont pack or the jackass seller whose reserve is even steeper than that. Of course, if GAI says it is a T206 pack, they must be right. I wonder how they found out what was in the pack? Perhaps the Karnak method Johnny Carson used to use:
{Johnny holds the envelope to his forehead)
"A T206 card" is the answer, Ed"
{He rips open envelope and extracts index card}
"What does some misguided greedy stooge think is in this pack?"
"Hohohohoh! You are correct, sir!"

Im no expert on unopened cigarette packages, but I always thought that 1909-11 era T206 cards (along with other nonsport cards/pins/etc.) came in a Piedmont box, similar to a matchbox. and the T206 era Boxes Ive seen were a different size than the graded pack in this auction. I have owned an opened 1909 Obak box (complete with T212-1 card and cigarettes) and it was also like a matchbox in design (center slides out from outside). My guess is that the Piedmont pack in auction is from a later date than the 1909-11 T206 era. Frank

Tax stamp isn't a "Dewitt Clinton". If you look at the top of the stamp full size you will see "Class A Cigarettes" at the top. I called Richard and invited him to post a question here to asking about its validity. He hasn't so far. Amazing how detail is sharp everywhere, except the tax stamp which is blurry.

Hi All,
This pack is from the early 20's not the 1909-1911 period. Another GAI Pack grading blunder............

Be well Brian

PS 99% of the packs for sale on Ebay or the major auction houses ARE NOT from the period, and the chances of the last 1% having a Baseball card in them are slim and none. Your best chances are Polar Bear& Period Piedmont packs, which tend to have more Factory dating than the others.

I agree with fkw also. I have a slide & shell 1909 piedmont box (Factory 42 4th District, NC) Check out the top of my tax stamp. Note the differences. If GAI knew what they were doing they would have put:

10th Scarcest back. Piedmont - Series 350-460 - Factory 42 - District 4 - State NC

The most damning evidence is I believe the front bottom says Liggett and Meyers... even though I couldn't read it for sure on that blurry scan.

A day like all days.
Filled with those events that illuminate our times.
Further proof that the information on slabs are:

99 1/2 % correct.
14 % of the time.

But they sure make the deceased look real purty.

Everyone makes mistakes, including boneheaded mistakes. The test of a seller of an ongoing auction is what he or she does when notified that the item is significantly misdescribed. Some stop the auction or correct description. Some do nothing and hope the bidders don't find out.

I’m going to have to go with gai as I stated to the few people who have called and been very helpful we had 2 of these unopened packs the second one we have opened and we removed a Hal Chase T206 Blue Back Portrait. Now I don’t claim to know the last thing about old cards or packs but I do know what I see and if I see a sealed pack get opened and a T206 card come out I have believe it was a T206 pack or that someone went through a whole lot of trouble to make it seem like it. Which I find hard to believe because the person we auctioned this for is a person I trust. And he has had these packs since before they were worth much.

I talked to Richard (Rich) again on the phone today. He stated that the tax stamp has "12" at the top left & right. He also stated the the tax stamp has "Class A Cigarettes" on it also. He's still insists that the other pack he owns with identical markings have produced a T206 card.

I purchased a carton of these at auction about 2 years back. Tax stamp 1922. 20 packs per carton and in NO way shape or form had any cards. They cost me about $18.00 per pack. With inflation maybe worth about $24.00 a pack now.
