That is disrespectful but it is hard to see the picture clearly. What is this supposed to be. Where is this from? IS it for sale?
what is the purpose behind it

Thanks for the better Picture

That is really bad IMO and it has many different artists doing it but if you collect all 20 cards and all by 1 artist according to the site

Purchase all 20 cards from any specific artist and receive an exclusive gold-stamped oversized print featuring all 20 cards!

The day when I can't go to a local store and buy a pack of cards to open for my collection is here I'm done. This year 2021 with all these so called shortages and limits I'm done..

BTW the card pictured here from OP is not what I collect.. Dumb IMO..

It's a:

2021 / Project 70 / T206 / 1987 Topps / shades & jewelry / special orange slice version / Honus Wagner

At least it's not an NFT.

I like it. Art is supposed to get a reaction from people. This isnít cutting up a jersey or something stupid. Itís an artistís interpretation of a
Classic card.

I don't find that card attractive or interesting. On the other hand, I don't see how it's disrespectful. My own collection is 90+% vintage, but I have seen a few new cards I admire. I'm not willing to pay the freight for it, but I thought this one was very cool...

I agree that I donít see this as being disrespectful and I echo the comment that at least no actual vintage item was destroyed to make the card. It's more a matter of whether this is the kind of thing you like.

If you want to see something disrespectful, look what someone did to an actual card. They took a 1990 Topps #2 Nolan Ryan (worth almost $1) and made it into a vaguely humorous piece of sort-of art. And then someone bought it and gave it to me because I often hum this song and they know I like baseball cards. And now I display it on my bookshelf because, while I do not collect modern cards, I think it is kind of funny.

The fact that there are new cards being made that you donít like, or are being sold in a way you don't like, should not affect your enjoyment of the part of the hobby you do like. As long as there is no deceit involved, I try not to get too worked up about what someone else is buying or selling.

The card the OP posted is not my cup of tea either so I will not be buying itÖalong with not buying millions of other cards available for sale (except for hopefully a couple of the cheaper ones in the Heritage auction).

In my best old man voice: "Ehhh....These young whipper-snappers have disrespected the honorable Honus Wagner, the greatest shortstop to ever field a ground ball and the holy grail of our cardboard worship. Who do they think they are? What's next, a color photo of the Babe?? Mr. Cobbs texting on an iphone? Today's kids wouldn't know a ballplayer from a buggy whip."

BTW, those Dr. J and Rapid Robert cards are cool, man.

A color photo of the Babe is possible, even if one probably doesn't exist.
A color film of the Babe is also just barely possible, and also probably does not exist. (Oddly, a color photo would be possible of nearly all baseball players, although it didn't become common enough until the late 30's

Cobb would probably be using an I phone today, and would probably be texting about how he invested in these things back when they were the size of a shoebox and only made phone calls.

You know, I think there actually is some color film of the Babe in HBO's "When it was a Game" DVDs, though it's post-career. So disrespectful.

I think the real purpose here is to introduce these great players of the past to this new generation of collectors...sometimes you need to do it in a way that they will connect.

Iron Butterfly is a real band. Steel Dragon was the band in the movie.

I don't think the card is so disrespectful as it, and other cards from the set are not really aesthetically appealing, nor what I'm into when it comes to collecting cards. I don't think they're an addition to the card canon, as it were. There are some modern cards, like the Feller posted above, that are really nice.

As far as "doing what it takes" to appeal to a younger generation, to me, doing something like this is talking down to prospective fans and/or collectors. Same thing with much about the game itself today, from the way the players dress, to 7-inning games and the 3-batter rule. I won't go into changes that I think could help the game, as it is off-topic.

Nothing wrong with an artist wanting to draw or paint something like this. I just would never want one.

Personally I've really enjoyed Project 70. Not every card appeals to me, but it's a real departure from the mass produced base sets with 15 different parallels and refractors. There are some really creative people doing some really cool things I've never seen on a baseball card before. I love that they're able to tip a cap to the history of the game and have some fun with it. The great part about the set is if you don't like this particular style, there is almost certainly an artist you will appreciate elsewhere in the set.

Take a look at what they've done with Willie Mays today; I guarantee you've never seen another baseball card like it.

I found two other things for people not to like about this. The card is only available for a limited time and (to my eye at least) the script on the top can be read as both T206 and Tgod.

Well, if this is for real, this is disrespectful. Is this is what is considered cutting edge and hip? Sad.

I don't think they're disrespectful. I think they're hideous, and don't want them in my collection, but I don't think bad art is necessarily disrespectful.

Agree. Who knows what Willie's response to it would be. Maybe he and his family would be highly amused by it. I have no clue.

Here's a cool one IMO. Captures the swag.

Right. Just to further clarify my viewpoint about that Mays card. If an artist wanted to paint it, fine. I'm all for free expression. To put it on a card and mass produce it, I think is disrespectful to Mays.

Just plain weird but whatever floats your boat. Out of curiosity I wonder if Mays approved that image. I can totally see the racial police throwing a fit about that imagery. The art is well done on it though.

This is the only Topps Project card I own. A beautiful card IMO. I've almost bought a few others that I thought were cool, but agree that many are just plain ugly. But I don't find any of them disrespectful, just not my particular taste. And I must admit, the Wagner got a chuckle out of me.

Totally. I also think this is a direction (maybe one of many) that younger collectors are pushing the industry. My own eye is drawn to some of the beautiful "classic" design cards being released in other sets (the Project 2020 Jackie Robinson above, for instance), but based on sales I'm not in the majority. And I think it's pretty cool that sales/orders for each card are tracked.

My son, who turns 6 this summer, loves the Alex Pardee cards (the artist who did the Willie Mays above). So I picked up and Artist's Proof (out of 51 or something like that) of the Trout and Acuna cards. Those should make great cornerstones for a collection if he starts one. For myself, I picked up an artist's proof of the the Griffey Jr cards from Project 2020. That ones seems like it will be a classic, and I really loved to watch him play.

Despite my previous feelings about Project 70, I do rather enjoy looking at that Acuna card

Of the many things I don't understand about that Wagner card, the orange slice is the most baffling. Is that some sort of inside reference?

I didn't get the orange slice, either. Over my head, I guess....

That card is likely to become a classic. My son and all his friends love it. In fact, almost fifteen thousand cards were sold off the Topps website, which is pretty impressive at $20 a piece. I have no idea what the secondary market is like, but I expect a lot of people who missed the window are already chasing it.

After seeing some posts of the other cards, I realize that the Mays Profject 70 card really isn't offensive, in that many cards in the set are similarly depicted. I only looked briefly at some other cards, and didn't realize fully what the set was about. Actually, I still need to look at more of it, and am still not sure what the set is all about, lol.

And I also have to say, that yes, the Honus Wagner card, when looked at in another light, is rather funny. All that said, I won't be seeking any of these cards for my personal collection!

It's all intended in fun... I may not like some of these renditions, or tributes, but I wouldn't call any of them "disrespectful"........I'm just not that easy to trigger...

How is this disrespectful in any way? Silly, for sure. But disrespectful?

It's an artist having some fun riffing on a classic image. It doesn't deface a real card. It keeps Honus' image in the eye of the hobby. It introduces T206 to a younger generation of collectors.

P2020 and P70 are fantastic happenings for the hobby. There's a lot of interesting takes on classic cards, creative interpretations of famous moments, edgy original art, and truly beautiful pieces that celebrate legends of the game. Yes, there are some misses Ė but that's all part of the discovery process!

I find the Biden joke quite funny. Well done.

As for the orange slice, the theme of the Honus card is "Pirates," and in the US, our pirates were often in the Caribbean. So you can see palm fronds, oranges, and jewelry symbolizing his team name. I actually liked that aspect of the card.

I also agree with art causing reactions. It's well done if someone talks about it.

I kind of like them. They are reminiscent of the classic comic artwork of the great Wally Wood (Mad Magazine, Topps, etc.) I probably won't ever shell out for these cards, but they bring back fond childhood memories of many of Topps' Non-sports cards of the '60s (Insult Postcards, Ugly Stickers, etc.)

They say the past tends to repeat itself, and these are just a benign example of that (see pics below...)

I can see how these modern-version cards would lure kids into the hobby, and don't mind them at all. At least nobody is being misled, cheated, defrauded, or coerced to accept someone's new tenets!

Check out the artists gallery on the Beckett site. It will put this set in a different light for you I'll bet. Personally not a fan of all the artists but when you see all of a particular artist's work you can respect it at least. When you see all 20 cards each artist does, it's really cool. (Go to artist gallery for Project 2020) Meanwhile check here....
