Default N370 Lone Jack - Post 'Em If You Got 'Em

Posted By: Jon Canfield

Well, today I received what I consider one of the holy grails of cigarette pack collecting. I've been searching for this for 10+ years now... Below is a complete, NM, Lone Jack cigarette pack. It even came complete with it's original card. Much to my dismay (kidding of course), it was not an N370. However, I'd love to see them if you get them!

Nice pickup Jon.

That N366 Sunflower is a tough one.

I thought you already acquired a Lone Jack pack from your Chicago source!? So if you now have two - and I have none - is a trade possible?

Leon has or had a slightly different LJ pack. I have a 2003 picture of Leon's pack somewhere.

The following link is for an article that is three years old already so if you already read it just skip it. But if you have the time to read it I would very much appreciate any input to its' accuracy because these packs are so rare that it is impossible to be sure of which pack is rarer than another and guess work is applied. Also any new information regarding these packs would be welcome. I would like to thank Jon again for some of the cigarette pack images he contributed to this article.

Jerry - Thanks for the note. This is my first Lone Jack although I know of 3 others. The first belongs to Leon (Leon, hope you don't mind me posting your pack). The second one belongs to a friend of mine who allowed me to use scans for the guide. A third was recently sold and although I do have scans of it, they are not on this computer so I couldn't post the pictures. As you will note, all differ slightly, including mine, (the 4th pack I know of and the 3rd pictured).

Also, I should note that yes, the auction did end early and I struck a deal with the seller. That being said, as those who saw the auction knew, the seller was a very knowledgable and advanced pack collector. Trust me, I didn't get any bargain and paid multiple of the opening bid price to get the pack.

Also, I should note, as for which pack is rarer - I don't think we could ever know. As I said above, I've seen four of them - all slightly different. I'm not sure of the date of Leon's or whether any cigarettes are included - maybe he can speak to that based on the tax stamp. The second one pictured above, I believe, is empty, but did come with a card (not baseball). The third one I saw sell (and was underbidder on) had 5 cigs or so, but no card and was in "rougher" condition. Mine is full and came with the card.

I believe mine to date to 1887-1888. The second one picture above I believe dates to 1887. The one I saw sell dated to 1888.

Can I bum a smoke off someone? I wonder how a 120 year old cigarette would taste. Back in high school, I had a buddy who was in need of a fix. He was broke, so he opened up his father's tin of Woodbines, dating from c. 1880. He claimed they were still OK!

By the way, I believe Lone Jack cigs hold some sort of Guinness record. I think it may be for the earliest known manufactured cigarette.

Bruce- that was one of a group of six I bought from Rob Lifson about 15-20 years ago. I was at his apartment and he had them sitting on the table. I asked him what he wanted and bought them on the spot (along with a Buchner Von Der Ahe that was part of the deal).

Boy, has the hobby changed.

Dave- Lone Jacks typically come with weak photos. Your Doc Bushong has one of the strongest I've ever seen. Great card. I like it even better than the SGC 84, which isn't too bad either.

Thanks guys, I love the strong resolution in Bushong...it's one of my favorites. I thought it would be especially appropriate to post it in a thread discussing packs. I've always imagined this card as an example of what all of those Lone Jack smokers must have seen when they opened their packs for a smoke way back when. Glad I could share.

Default N370 Lone Jack - Post 'Em If You Got 'Em

This was found at an estate sale in Virginia. The pack was located inside a cigar box and when the pack was slid open it had a N365 Inventors & Inventions card inside. Anyways, thought you guys might like to see. I'm not a pack expert but do collect the N365 issue.

If you have any specific questions with regards to the pack let me know. I know there are a few pack collectors out there.

Thanks
Brent

Brent - that is the identical style pack which I purchased - very nice. Were the cigs still inside?

Just the card. The Tax stamp says, "Act of March 8th 1889" but it could also say "1883". Not real clear...
