Default Looking for Photo of Roy Campanella with Trains

Hello and thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I am senior editor at Classic Toy Trains magazine and am currently writing a book on the history of Lionel toy trains using photographs.

Roy Campanella was a Lionel modeler in the 1950s. I am trying to find pictures of him with his Lionel toy trains.

One picture from 1951 sold on eBay 4 years ago--it can be seen on Worthpoint.com.

I'm wondering if anyone can help me track down that photo or any others showing Roy Campanella with toy trains.

Since I'm new to the baseball memorabilia hobby, any help as to where else to look for this photo will be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Roger Carp

The HOF keeps a photo archive and can do a search on Campy for such a picture.

Wish you well with your hunt.

PLEASE post whatever you find. I have a faint recollection of seeking Campanella in the foreground, smiling over his trains. I'm wondering if it was a short film clip...

Getty Images -- shot by Ralph Morse for LIFE -- below. Getty may be able to find outtakes, too, what's online is just the tip of the iceberg. If it ran in print, it'd be in the June 8, 1953 issue. I can't find interior images of that issue... Had a copy a million years ago.

I'd contact the Model Railroader folks (your sister company?) to see if they printed anything way back then.

And, how about that ZW transformer under his hands. That was top of the line, then. And they remain in use today.

Good to see that photo, thanks.

Many thanks to everyone who has replied. The image on Getty Images is indeed from Life magazine (1953). I am familiar with this one.

The one I am looking for came from 1951 and shows Roy Campanella leaning over an elevated display of his trains. That is the one that sold on eBay in 2016 and can be seen on Worthpoint.com

I am also told that the filming of the Campanella home shown in the "Person to Person" TV show from October of 1953 also shows the trains. However, I do not believe footage of that segment has survived.

I will keep looking and appreciate the comments shared!

Good luck on your search.

I messaged a bit with a friend who collects film, and did a brief bit of looking.

Person to person was done as a multi camera live feed, with wireless audio. Pretty amazing for 1953. They would have had to film it from a special television onto usually 16mm film. That way reruns could be done later (Or rebroadcast on the west coast for network shows)

I was a bit surprised that some episodes are available. The first episode with Campanella wasn't one I found, but if the others are out there there's hope because it shows the copies were made. Whether any of that episode survived is another matter.

Darn, that was quick. I didn't think I'd find it at all.

Campanella is included on that tape.

Getty images has at least one still from the show, but no trains
