George Sisler-Carl Lundgren-Fielding Yost @ U Michigan - Share Your College Photos

I have an album page from one of the University of Michigan players. Pictured are the baseball coach (1914-1920), the famous to this board Carl Lundgren, and football coach Fielding Yost, their famous football coach (1901-1926).

The pics show the players at the hotel in uniform, and out on the town at landmarks and hitting on some young ladies (captioned "A favorite sport").
Second from the left seated in the pic at the hotel with the uniforms on is George Sisler, who lettered at Michigan from 1913-1915.

The dates narrow the photos down to 1914-1915. Some are labeled, so I emailed the baseball staff to ask for the team schedules in those two years and they were kind enough to send them. They only played Vanderbilt in 1914, so that makes these 1914 photos.

That Sisler is my favorite image of his we have ever handled. I have yet to see a better photograph of his even several years after it was sold!

Hi all,

This is an original photo from the kickoff of the University of Washington's first game of the 1922 season.

In their first game of the season, they faced off against a football team consisting of crew members from the U.S.S. Idaho battleship.

Prior to the 1922 football season, the UW football team was known as the Sun Dodgers and briefly as the Vikings. The name and mascot were changed to the Huskies after a contest in February 1922.

Being that this picture is from the kickoff of the 1922 season it is from the first moment that the UW football team ever took the field as the Huskies, the name in which they are recognized and known by to this day.

The school's football stadium was also only two years old at the time of the picture, having been completed in 1920 and was known as U of W stadium at that time. Thus making this the first photo of the stadium as "Husky Stadium."

Right up my alley. I collect photos of U.S. Olympians and many of them are college athletes. I quickly scanned some, along with some I already had scanned. Very little alteration of the images other that some cropping and resizing for this site though they are still large. Most I scanned in color a few in grayscale for contrast. All are pre-WWII with a large number of them Pre-WWI. I will post some now and some more later today. For your enjoyment.

Lee Barnes - gold medal pole vault 1924. This photo shows him at the Olympic trials. The glare is in the photo. He had just graduated Hollywood H.S. in CA and would enter USC.

Chet Bowman - competed in the 100m in 1924, but no medal. Star running back on the Syracuse football team.

Sabin Carr - gold medal in the pole vault 1928. He went to Yale. I also have a photo of him in high school.

Wilson "Buster" Charles - finished fourth in the decathlon in 1932. A Native American he attended Haskell Institute. One of two Olympians to attend that school.

Clarence Childs - won a bronze medal in the hammer throw 1912. Attended Yale. The other person is Simon Gillis who competed in 1908 and 1912. Gillis was 37 at the time of this photo. Photo was taken at the Eastern Olympic Track Trials at Hilltop Park

Ralph Craig - Won gold in the 100m & 200m at the 1912 Olympics. Flag bearer during the opening ceremony 1948. Attended Michigan. One of my favorite photos

Eddie Eagan - The only Olympic athlete to win a gold medal in the summer (Boxing 1920) and winter (bobsled 1932). This is his Yale Captains photo. He was also a Rhodes Scholar and boxed at Oxford.

Dave Fall - Won a silver medal in diving at the 1924 games. He attended Stanford. The man next to him is Ernst Brandsten who competed in diving for Sweden at the 1912 Olympics. There is some card from the 1930's that the 'grading clowns' identify as Babe Ruth. It is actually this man.

John DeWitt - He won a silver medal in the hammer throw at the 1904 Olympics. He attended Princeton. He was a star football player there. Captain of the team and Walter Camp All American in 1903.

Johnny Garrels -Won a silver medal in the 110m hurdles and bronze medal in the shotput at the 1908 Olympics. He played football at Michigan for Fielding Yost on the 1904 and 1905 'Point a Minute' teams. He was captain of the 1907 track team. This is a real photo post card, probably from 1905 or 1906.

Marquis 'Bill' Horr - Won silver and bronze medals in the discus at the 1908 games. There were two styles of discus throw back then - one handed and two handed aka the Greek Style. He attended Syracuse where he was also a star football player. Member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Verne Booth - won a silver medal in the cross country team event at the 1924 Olympics. Attended Johns Hopkins. Served in the Signal Corps in WWI.

Everett Bradley - won a silver medal in the pentathlon at the 1920 Olympics. He attended Kansas. Became wealthy in oil production and consulting.

Charley Brookins - competed in the 400m hurdles at the 1924 games. He attended Iowa. He set several world records in the 220m low hurdles. He was biracial, but not revealed until the 2000's though I had deduced that from the photo. His father was a slave who became a reverend. I like the composition of this photo.

Ken Churchill - competed in the javelin at the 1932 Olympics. He attended UCal Berkeley. Photo taken at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Tom Churchill - competed in the decathlon at the 1928 Olympics. Attended Oklahoma. He competed in five sports there. Big 8 boxing champ as a freshman. All American in Basketball and Football. Played minor league baseball for the Yankees.

Bill Cox - won a bronze medal in the 3000m team race on his 20th birthday at the 1924 Olympics. He was still attending Mercersburg Academy. Later went to Penn State. Ran a 4:18.6 mile in the mid 1920's.

Ira Davenport - won a bronze medal in the 800m at the 1912 Olympics. He also played in the baseball demonstration game with Jim Thorpe. He attended the University of Chicago.

Gayle Dull - won a silver medal in the 3 mile team event at the 1908 Olympics. He attended Michigan. Died in 1918 after an appendix operation.

Harry Frieda - competed in the decathlon at the 1924 Olympics. Attended the University of Chicago. Long time high school coach in Chicago - Lake View and Calumet. Photo taken at Franklin Field in Philadelphia.

Charles Harlow - competed in javelin at the 1928 Olympics. He attended Stanford. Photo taken at the 1928 Olympic Trials at Harvard Stadium.

John Paul Jones - competed in athletics at the 1912 Olympics. He also participated in the baseball demonstration with Jim Thorpe. On both winning teams. He attended Cornell. He was the first person to be recognized as the world record holder in the mile by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) in 1913 with a time of 4:14.4. Though it was slower than the professional mark. One of two signed photos I have of him from that period.

Leroy Jones - competed in athletics at the 1908 Olympics. He attended the University of Pennsylvania. He died at sea of a heart attack while on vacation in Bermuda.

Mort Kaer - competed in pentathlon at the 1924 Olympics. He attended USC. He also played football there. Set a record for touchdowns in 1925 which was not broken until O.J. Simpson did it in 1968. Simpson also broke his career touchdown mark. Played one year for the Frankford Yellow Jackets of the NFL. Member of the College Football HOF. This is a 1923 real photo postcard.

Bob Legendre - won a bronze medal in the pentathlon at the 1924 Olympics. He attended Georgetown. Also earned a PHD and DDS. He was an in store dentist in Washington, D.C. at his death.

Tom Lieb - won a bronze medal in the discus at the 1924 Olympics. Set a world record two months after the games. He attended Notre Dame where he also played football for Knute Rockne, and with George Gipp. He was the defacto head coach for the 1929 National Championship team at Notre Dame. He was assistant coach and Rockne was laid up with a leg infection. I once owned a discus endorsed by him with his signature on it much like a baseball bat.

Josiah McCracken - won a silver in shot put and a bronze in the hammer at the 1900 Olympics. He attended Penn where he was a football All American in 1899. He earned an M.D. and became a medical missionary in China for 50 years. Two photos of him at Penn.

Roy Mercer - competed in athletics and the baseball demonstration at the 1912 Olympics. He set a high school record in the pole vault. Earned his M.D. at Penn and served on the staff at 2 hospitals in Philadelphia while coaching at and as athletic director at Swarthmore. He was a 3 time All American in football at Penn. Member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Richmond 'Boo' Morcom - competed in pole vault at the 1948 Olympics. He attended the University of New Hampshire. This snapshot was taken at the AAU Championships in Milwaukee in 1948.

Fay Moulton - won a bronze medal at the 1904 Olympics. He competed on the track team while attending Yale Law School. Photo from 1903.

Frank Mount Pleasant - competed in the long and triple jump at the 1908 games. He attended Carlisle Indian Industrial School. He was quarterback on the football team with Jim Thorpe. He later played semi pro football with the Buffalo All Stars.

Arlie Mucks - competed in the discus at the 1912 Olympics. He attended Wisconsin and is in their Hall of Fame. He was an All American football player in 1914.

Oscar Ostoff - won gold and silver medals in weightlifting at the 1904 Olympics. Attended Marquette and Wisconsin. He was better known for his swimming and football skills. This is a real photo post card showing him as the head football coach at Washington State University.

Winthrop 'Ding' Palmer - won a silver medal in ice hockey at the 1932 Olympics. He also won gold and silver medals at the World Championships. He attended Yale. In 1927-28 he scored 41 goals including 7 in one game for them. Photo shows him in 1929 at Yale.

Amisoli Patasoni - Competed at the 1920 Olympics. He attended Haskell Institute. When the Smithsonian had an exhibit on Native Americans in the Olympics he was not even included on the list. They also missed several others.

Clarence 'Bud' Pinkston - Competed in diving. Won a gold and silver in 1920 and 2 bronzes in 1924. Attended Stanford. He married fellow diver Betty Becker, winner of a gold and silver in 1924. He coached her to a gold in 1928 which she won on the second birthday of their twins.

Horace Ramey - competed in track at the 1908 Olympics. Attended the University of Michigan.

Alma Richards - Won a gold medal in the high jump at the 1912 Olympics. He graduated from BYU. Later attended Cornell, Stanford and USC Law School. Photo shows him circa 1914 at the AAU Championships in a Cornell jersey. The person beside him is fellow 1912 Olympian Avery Brundage. Brundage competed in the discus, pentathlon and decathlon. He also competed in literature in 1932 and 1936. He would become president of the American Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee. He is wearing the jersey of the Chicago Athletic Association.
