Peter S., PC

The Hall of Fame has never been just about the numbers. If it was then Cy Young should have been in the first group of 5 elected.

The HOF is a historical institution. That's the reason they make retired players wait 5 years.

Some people still think that Bill Mazeroski was a bad decision by the Hall, I would say it just takes longer for some aspects of greatness to appear. It simply took 25+ years to figure out that Maz was the greatest fielding 2nd baseman of all-time. It takes longer for people to realize that his walk-off homer in the '60 World Series would stand the test of time.

Brilliant logic Peter--maybe I should not give up on Vic Davalillo if all these other guys get in.

Peter C. I think you make my point for me. They have to wait 5 years so there is some historical perspective on a player. It seems to me that at that point, if a guy can't get in after several years of eligibility, a definitive judgment has been made. Letting players in who played decades ago is misplaced nostalgia if you ask me.

Peter S.,

Well...the HOF is operating on a longer time-frame. At a certain time players are no longer eligible to be elected by the Veteran's Committee. With this new committee I have no idea what the time limit is.

To Joshua Levine:

Please, NO on Sherry Magee being inducted; if only because of the fact that then, all of us T206 HOFer collectors would suddenly need to get his error card!!!!!

Just imagine what that would do to the price of it!!!!!

Steve

Edited because I misspelled Sherry's name!

james you asked "Were players like Jim Rice, Andre Dawson and Alan Trammel considered the elite or the exceptional players of their times" yes of course they were(dawson 8 gold gloves,7x top 20 mvp,8 x all star) (rice 6x top 5 mvp, 8 x all star) (trammell 6x all star,4 x gold glove) i'd take those 3 on my team anyday.

Harold Baines is on the ballot.

The only good thing you can say about the 2 lengthy player strikes of 1981 and 1994 is it keeps Harold out of the Hall of Fame.

Harold was a nice player, but no Hall of Famer, and without those strikes he gets 3000 hits and 400 homers.

He finished with 2866 hits and 384 homers.
