Default Gomer Trivia

Who set a record in 1953 that wasn’t broken for 17 years?

Answer with his card.

Well played and true, but not the answer I had in mind.

He went 0 for 70 in 1962, which is a record. I think he is the one that got a standing ovation for hitting a foul ball by the fans at Wrigley when he was a Cub.

Not sure if he set a record or if it was topped in 1970 but I know he had a pretty horrific inning in 1953. He also has "Gomer" in his name:

Wayne Simpson is a character in Gomer Pyle and Wayne Simpson the pitcher had a terrific rookie season in 1970. But I have been unable to come up with the connection to 1953.

Nice try, but Gromek, as an “anagram” gomer (with a silent k), may not have set a record in any year.

Ok, how about Max Surkont striking out 8 consecutive batters? It stood until it was broken by Tom Seaver in 1970 with 10 in a row.
I’m not sure how Gomer fits though. I don’t have a card of him or Gomer Pyle either.

I’m unable to rapidly confirm the Surkont record, but will assume it is true, but the Surkont/Seaver answer, although correct, is not the one I’m looking for.

Stay tuned my next post will reveal my answer and I don’t think it is weird or obscure.

Until then consider the following clue: 168

168 in 1953 Topps is Willard Schmidt. I am doubting he set any records.

Believe it or not he did, the first player in MLB history to be hit by a pitch twice n the same inning by different pitchers. It has happened twice since, the first Frank Thomas and Brady Anderson.

But Frank said the record was broken 17 years later. So who got HBP THREE times in the same inning in 1970?

Believe or not neither Frank Thomas (either one) nor Brady Anderson played in 1970, but thanks for the education.

A couple of more clues and the reveal

Ernie didn't do it, ________ did.

The record was broken by a player with his shortened limb.

1n 1953

Rechichar 60.jpg

Bert "Not Ernie" Rechichar set the NFL record for the longest field goal of 56 yards which equals 168 feet.

In 1970

Dempsey.jpeg

"Toeless" Tom Dempsey broke Rechichar's NFL record kicking a 63 yard field goal with part of his foot and five toes congenitally missing. He also was born without four fingers, but didn't set any handball records.

The question never specified a sport.

Kicking the thread to the top was in fact a clue as both Bert and Tom both kicked their way to the top of a list in the record books.

The gomers on the board would be the only ones who were alive and possibly could remember the day of Rechichar's historic field goal.

Schmidt was hit by a pitch in 1959 as a Red twice in the third inning by Bob Rush and Lew Burdette. Frank Thomas did it as a Met in 1962 and Brady Anderson did it as an Oriole in 1999. Definitely not what Frank is looking for, it just blew my mind that Willard Schmidt held a MLB record, for three years anyway.

Now that the mystery is solved, what's a Gomer? My sister the doctor says it means a troublesome patient (Get Outta My Emergency Room), but that doesn't seem relevant to this thread.

You are obviously not a gomer yet, when everything becomes irrelevant.
