Default What is your LEAST favorite card/pose?

I hate this card. It’s not Cy Young. Not even close. It’s Irv Young, and it’s an ugly pose to boot. This singular card/pose keeps me from wanting to ever pursue the E98 set. I don’t want a set where one of the key HOFers isn’t even pictured on his own card?! I think the E98 set, with all its color variations, is generally a very cool set. But this card literally ruins the set for me. I hate it!

Let’s see your least favorite card/pose and why....

PS - my post is in no way intended to distract from Casey2296’s thread and the very cool project he is working on. It was that thread- and seeing Irv Young’s ugly mug atop Cy Young’s name- that was the catalyst for this thread, but I think what he has done is awesome, especially in all green

I can't stand this card because so many people try to say it's a horizontal pose in the set. And when I see it displayed horizontally on eBay I actually get pissed.

Ha! I'm honored I could trigger you. My candidate would be the ugly ass E90-1 Joe Jackson that collectors have convinced themselves is worth $$K.

PS: the whole Irv Young thing bothers me too tbh. The guy I bought that card from didn't even know it wasn't Cy Young. Once I explained that to him I was able to purchase that card within my self imposed budget.

Great idea for a thread.

The best player in the set, and THIS is the artwork? It's not even close!

Default I hate it but wouldn't trade it

I don't mind black-and-white cards, although this one seems particularly drab. What bothers me about this card is it shows the greatest pitcher of the era batting. I realize that in 1921 pitchers hitting was taken more seriously than it is today and Johnson was above average with the stick (for a pitcher). But the National League almost implemented a DH as long ago as 1893 and Connie Mack was an early advocate. So, even in 1921, pitcher hitting was viewed as a chink in the game's appeal.

Having said all that, however, I have to admit I love the card because it is so perverse and therefore unique that, well, you know. Never mind.

All those terrible air brush jobs Topps and OPC did on both baseball and hockey.
Also Topps football cards without helmet logos.
I was at at card show where Garry Unger was a signer and was getting his 68-69 OPC rookie card signed and was quick to point out his head was on Norm Ullman's body. We had a bit of fun with that one.

Surprisingly, most of Cy Young's cards don't look like Cy Young

I agree on the E90-1 Joe Jackson. Awful looking card along with Cobb W515.

I agree with this one, whole heartedly. And I collect the E98s. I refuse to buy the young, so I'll never complete the set. Seeing one just sell for 6 figures is baffling. It's not rare like a T206 Doyle. it's not attractive. and it's the wrong human. There's nothing about this card that is "premium" other than the fact that the collecting world has all agreed to just blindly consider this Cy Young.

Although I initially indicated that "no explanation is needed", here is the explanation:

The original photo (see below) was taken from the 1947 All-Star game. Ted was sliding into second base, which was being covered by St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion. Marion wasn't under contract with Fleer in 1959, so he was air-brushed out.
Hence, the "quicksand that butts right up against a chemical tailings pond."

The tailings pond makes sense now...that's just Marty Marion melted down.

I share both of your positions. I collect Young but have steered clear of this card, even pre-BSF. It's not Cy, it's Irv. I do collect the E90-1, E92, E101, etc...pose however. Not only do I like the color, but I do NOT believe it's Irv as many have suggested. Like many of the other players in those sets, the quality and attention to detail of the artwork is a bit lacking. But if you consider the eyebrows, ears, etc....it's no more Irv than Cy. It's like so many other Cy Young cards that really don't look like Cy Young. Let's face it, only one of his T206 cards looks anything like him.

I couldn't disagree more. That card looks absolutely nothing like Cy Young, but does bear a resemblance to Irv, especially the chin:

E91 and T207 cards are the worst in my book. A lot of the strip cards are pretty bad as well.

Default What is your LEAST favorite card/pose?

Easily the T206 Heinie Zimmerman. Just not a good card.
I’m a Cubs guy, yet this was the last card I got to complete my team set. Put it off for as long as possible.

Easy! T206 Dick Hoblitzell. I have so much distaste for this card. It's such a fantastic pose – the energy of the catch, the slight arch of the back, how his arms frame his head... but therein lies the problem. His face. His face! This is among the most ugly facial illustrations I've ever lain eyes on. How this was ever allowed to go to print is beyond me.

There are some great ones on this thread. I agree on the e90-1 Jackson, what a fugly card.

This one is the ugliest though imo, I just really dislike it.
