Default 'nother piece of trivia

Between 1949 (when Jackie Robinson first won it) and 1963, black guys won the MVP in the National League 11 times (several repeats there); black guys won the MVP in the American league once--in 1963--Elston Howard.

Oh my goodness, did you say "black guys" rather than African Americans? What would the PC guru's of the world think about this? Personally, I would venture to guess that Roy Campanella, Ernie Banks, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron probably were born in the US. So poop on the PC people.

You've got to figure that they were deserving of the award. I don't think that they just gave the awards away to show that they were doing the PC thing because back then I would venture top guess nobody cared about the PC thing.

I'm trying to remember who the other players (not black) were that won the award in the NL between 1949 and 1963:

I can only come up with Dick Groat in 1960. The only reason I remember is because I can vaguely recall the 1975 Topps series with the MVP award winners. I guess I'll have to cheat and look this up. First I'll give it a day to see who else pops in with the answers.

The non-Blacks are Konstanty, Sauer, Grote. Koufax won it in 63, so it was actually 11 Blacks from 1949-62. I think Boyer won it in 64.

As for the PC term African-American, call a Jamican that and see what kind of reaction you get. African-American had to be the most illconcieved and least thought out of all the PC terms, although most PC terms just plain silly.

"African-American," (his family has been here for generations, and there's some Creole mixed up in there too), and he said: "Two things: 1) Who, me? and 2) Sort of flattered." I try to imagine what I would feel like if someone asked me if I were Israeli (I'm Jewish), and--you know, it's the same sort of thing. Even if I HATE what the Israelis are doing now, it's sort of nice to be associated with where your people originally came from. Even if you're not sure they did...
