I believe you may be referring to "Babe Ruth The Idol of the American Boy" by Daniel (1932). It was printed on poor quality paper and most are not in great shape but a fairly nice copy can usually be found for $40.00 to $60.00.

Tom

The book is by Dan Daniel, and is called Babe Ruth, Idol of the American Boy. It is an ugly book, with cheap cardboard covers. Published in 1930. It is readily available on ebay and elsewhere. It is not valuable. It is the book equivalent of an ugly strip card.

I've never seen the book before, but with that one sentance, I know exactly what it looks like.

Here is my copy of this book. I acquired it back in the "paleolithic era" in an old Antique shop.
I have to differ with some of the comments posted here. This is a classic example of why......
"you don't want to judge a book by it's cover". Dan Daniel was a great Sports writer in his time;
and, this book of his is interesting reading. It was published while Ruth was still playing in 1930.
And, the 104 pages have some great stories on the Bambino; and, some nice photos by Charles
Conlon.

Ted,
I agree with both you and Max. It is an ugly book with cheap cardboard covers but has some good stuff between the covers and, of course, the title page in yours makes it a beauty.

See, now I always liked that purple and yellow cover, thought it looked kind of neat. But it is a relatively common and inexpensive book.

I have never turned down buying a vintage book due to a lack of aesthetics. That said, much of the appeal of book collecting appeal for me is similar to card collecting: the more attractive the cover, the more desirable it is.

For example, here is the first work of fiction "by" that noted novel novelist, George Herman Ruth, from 1920. The book itself is tortuous to read (as most early baseball fiction is), but the dust jacket cover is appealing.

The dust jacket is sensational...and for that matter there are a large number of baseball books where the aesthetics of their covers far surpass the quality of their text.
