Default Question about caramel cards

Posted By: Richey

I see the E121 cards as being of a series of 80. I also see the E121 cards as being in a series of 120. I see that they are from the year 1921 in the psa registry, but I also see that they are in the year 1922. Are these all the same cards, and PSA just separated them according to "series of 80" and "series of 120"? And are the "80s" from 1921, and the "120s" from 1922? Really confusing, and PSA doesn't help much.

Default Question about caramel cards

Posted By: Jeff O

Per Lipset's Encyclopedia, E121s are known with backs specifying both 80 subjects and 120 subjects. He feels it likely that the 80 subjects backs are from 1921 and the 120 subjects from 1922.

It should be noted that the total number of subjects are not accurate, as there are 107 players known with the 80 subjects back and 116 different players with the 120 subjects back... more of each if you include variations.

A very complicated set...

The E121 "Series of 80" is from 1921. 121 different cards (not including variations) comprise this series.

The E121 "Series of 120" is from 1922. It has the same general appearance as the 1921 set except for some variations in the printing on the bottom. 126 different cards (not including variations) comprise this series. The reverse is different from the 1921 set since it contains the words "This set consists of pictures of 120 of the leading Base Ball Stars" instead of only "eighty of the leading Base Ball Stars."

There is also an E122 "Series of 80" Set from 1922. It is more difficult to find than either of the E121 sets and it has a somewhat different appearance/design on front. The reverse side is the same as the E121 "Series of 80" made a year earlier. 81 different cards (not including variations) comprise this series.
