It's like one of those whodunit mysteries where the answer is, the person who hanged himself stood on a block of ice to be able to reach his noose, and the ice slowly melted away afterward.

Here, the 'water damage' is they fashioned a pair of scissors from ice and then used them to cut the card in half, leaving nothing but a puddle of water in the aftermath.
