Default What am I? 1930'sish Supplements?

Posted By: Jon Canfield

I got these a few years back in a lot of type cards. Any idea what designation they are (and year)? Are they 1930's Sporting News supplements? Do they carry any value at all or "not even worth the paper they are printed on"?

Thanks!

The Wilson is from a set of 30 St. Louis Cardinals produced by Metro Studios in St. Louis. Not sure about the Veeck. The Wilson has an EX value of appx. $20. You do not see these very often.

Both are from 1931. The Wilson is a Metropolitan Studios St Louis team issue which is worth about $15-$25 depending on condition. The Veeck is a cool card and is a Chicago Cubs Team Issue Picture Pack card. If it is nice it is about $25-$45 or so. They are both listed in the Standard Catalog but I dont have mine in front of me so I cant give you a page number.

Rhys is almost right, I think.

About the cards he is absolutely correct. I truly think that the Metropolitan Studio set didn't get sent out until early 1932. I could be wrong on that. I have an envelope the set was mailed in... but this envelope has no cancellation or stamps. The Standard Catalog says 1931. And the players, coaches, manager and owner depicted are 1931, I just think it was early 1932 before the set was available. I think they were available at the park during the 1932 season.

So most folks accept 1931 as the year for Metro Studios. I think it is 1932. Anyone here have an envelope with the stamps and cancellation on it???

Frank.

Jon

What is the size of the Metro Studios? I would have some interest in purchasing it from you, if you have any interest in selling. Email me at jeff.mohler@clymer.net

6 1/4" x 9 1/2" is what most folks go with for Metro Studios...

I figure that in 1930, when the Cardinals make the World Series, there is no set issued of the players. So there would not have been during the 1931 season either, at least not until after they'd won the World Series. If photographs had immediately been taken, then the images would be all quite similar. But the images are different. Some show the stands in the background, some have an artificial background, some are studio images. I think this is because when the issue was contemplated some of the subjects were gone, no longer with the Cardinals. So Metro Studios took photos of current players, then scraped together images of departed players as best they could, then offered the set of the 1931 World Champions for sale... and that would have been in 1932.

Similarly, the Cardinals won the World Series in 1926... the Middy Bread cards are 1927, not 1926, although I think the World Championship had a lot to do with baseball interest and the issuance of the Middy Bread cards the following year.
