Default 2022 Topps Baseball Series 2

Hello everyone,
I have always been a vintage pre 1980 guy. I had never collected the modern era. It’s like I need a dictionary to learn all the new terms and language, lol 😆.
I just don’t the modern era. Anyway, at a show recently I picked up 2 packs of the series 2 only because finding out that Spencer Strider’s rookie is in that series. Who else is there to look for that has potential in the series 2? Like I said I bought the 2 packs there which was $5.50 each or two for $10. Sound reasonable? Then I got two more packs yesterday for 8.
I’d really appreciate your experience and expertise.
Many thanks 😊
Rick

Series 2 has the Rookie short prints of Bobby Witt Jr. and Julio Rodriguez. But these cards are tough to pull.

This probably should be in the Postwar Modern forum.

Hi Al, you’re right and I thought I posted this in the modern section. I could have sworn I did it correctly, lol. My bad and I’m sorry for any confusion….

I dabble in modern and agree that the Bobby Witt Jr. and Julio Rodriguez cards are the best pulls, but as mentioned they are referred to as SP cards (short prints)....meaning Topps made less of those two than the other base cards.

If you are buying single packs in person, then yeah, $4 or $5 per pack is about right.

If you're only after Spencer Strider, than your cheapest option is just to buy the Spencer Strider base card on eBay....looks like he's selling around $5.00 shipped.

But if you want the fun of pulling Spencer Strider from a pack, and more chances at getting a rare parallel of Spencer Strider (Gold version, Black version, Image Variation, etc.) then you might consider just ordering a whole box...about $105 for 24 packs. You'll likely pull a Spencer Strider base card from the box (but not guaranteed), and have a chance at pulling some other fun stuff (like the JRod, Witt, a relic card, an auto, etc.). But it's like the lottery, you likely won't get $105 value out of your $105 box....but opening packs is FUN!

Have you thought of checking the Breakers? My guess is rather paying for a whole box/case to get a Strider card, buy the option from some Breakers opening 2022 Topps Series II cases or boxes and simply purchase whatever team/option will get you Strider cards. Will likely be much cheaper in the long run than you buying packs/boxes/cases yourself.

It really doesn't matter and I almost didn't point it out. But yes there is a modern section.

Rick- it was a good post and you got some good input. Always good to have new discussions wherever they show up. People can be interested and read them or if not pass on them

$5 for hobby packs seems a little high. May $3-$4 for hobby and $15-$18 for jumbo.

But also, Witt and JRod are short prints in the 2022 Topps Chrome packs. I'm sure Strider is in that too. So you might check those, although it just came out. So it will be pricey still.

I would agree that the new 2022 Topps Chrome set is far superior to Topps Series 2. Although it's just as difficult to score the Witt Jr. and J Rod base cards.

Strider is also auto only in Topps Chrome. But boy is it selling.

Chrome is like $275 a box, and Topps screwed up and didn’t insert the big SSP rookies. The shine carries a huge premium this year.

Wait what? I thought that was the draw of the Chrome. To get those few SPs (Julio, Witt, Tork, etc). Why else would Seattle spots in case breaks be going for around $2k?

They're just not guaranteed. You can still pull them from Chrome hobby and Chrome jumbo. Regular Hobby Chrome guarantees 2 autos per box and you get 5 with a jumbo, but jumbo is pricey.

The big SSP's weren't packed out at all. They're compensating by giving away a 2 card silver pack for the sold boxes; but these packs will almost all go to distributors and then big sellers and breakers, not the actual person who paid the ~$275 a box. The better ones will pass them onto the actual buyers, I think Blowout has already promised it. Topps is taking a lot of crap among the younger crowd for this one. Not a good look alongside the big price hike this year for Chrome.

Oh wow. Come to think of it, I've only seen their autos pulled during breaks.
