Nice card! This is one of the remaining 15 cards I'm looking for to finish my '33 Goudey set, the price scared me off a few times, and of course now I wish I'd pulled the trigger months ago. Congrats!

Surprise local find of a card I've been searching for a good while now.
Even with the typical toning, the '32 US Caramel cards are always really pleasing to me for some reason.

And a couple of post-war pickups came along with Big Poison.

Picked up one of my Unicorns.
About as high up the CJ14 ladder as I'm going to climb, just a few more to complete my run. Fortunately, I had a consignment do well so I could defray the majority of the cost.

Always willing to jump at the chance to pick up an O'Doul, even a somewhat blurry one like this 1933-36 Zeenut.

Picked up a cool barnstorming Ruth/Gehrig signed photo from Oct 12, 1928 along with some 1920 Universal Toy cards.
With Ruth and Gehrig cards approaching the stratosphere, the signed photo seemed like a bargain!!

Took a shot at a raw card and am pretty happy with the results: a Zeenut year that is tough to find with a coupon and a pretty good player as well (I assume this is Doc Crandall since the year and team matches up). According to Baseball Reference he won over 300 games when his major and minor league records are combined and according to Wikipedia he was in the inaugural class of the PCL Hall of Fame in 1943.

Another benefit of raw cards is that they scan much better (at least with my crappy scannner where I can't adjust the focus).

That is Doc Crandall, who evidently was the first MLB pitcher to be used consistently as a relief pitcher, and was given the nickname Doc by Damon Runyon who said Crandall was "the physician of the pitching emergency." Which of course is pretty cool.

Besides multiple Zeenut cards, Doc is also seen in the T205, T206, T207 and Cracker Jack sets, as well as others.

Crandall was also a very good hitter, and in 1914 for the St. Louis Terriers in the Federal League he was also used a second baseman. Which worked pretty well, as that year he went 13-9 with a .309 average and.429 OBP. He hit .285 for his major league career, and in the minors he hit as high as .356.

Picked this up from a fellow board member. It arrived on the 1st, so technically a May pickup. Thanks, Steve.

I traded away a Chase Blue earlier this year. I began to miss the card shortly thereafter. After a couple weeks went by, I began looking for a replacement. The amount of time spent looking at listings online was getting out of hand rather quickly, though. I figured it best to pick one up before objectivity gave way to obsession.

Guess I really am a T206 collector. I didn't set out to be. My sweet spot was '52 - '89 mainstream sets. However, The Monster had other ideas.

Random checklist pick ups. Not an "M" collector but couldn't pass up the Crawford.

Thank you Jeff, aka jb217676, for this killer circa 1910 notebook with Hal Chase on the front cover and Frank Chance in the back. I've been looking for one of these for a long time. In fact, I believe I was the underbidder for this very book on Ebay many years ago. So glad to be able to (finally) add it to my Chase collection.

Yep! Both poses, just like the T205 set (but no "baseline" variation).

Some nice BST Pickups - Down to 6 remaining HOF Portraits and the start to what I hope is a great back run for Herzog.

Default May pickup thread

Beautiful cards this month; especially like the Cracker Jacks! Was able to add this Ruth in a recent trade:

Default 1930 W554 HOF Cards

Picked up these four 1930 W554 HOF cards. Low grade but tough cards to find. I previously had a low grade Lou Gehrig SGC 10 in my collection.

I know it's a low grade card, but I've been looking for this card for awhile and finally found one.

My first ever "pick-up" post.

These cards were, literally, the ones that got me interested in vintage cards back in 1983. I was visiting a dear family friend with my parents...the adults were doing their adult things and I was sitting on a porch ripping into some '83 topps packs, watching the Braves play on TV. The friend saw what I was doing, and went to retrieve his childhood collection to share...we talked for what seemed like hours about the players, baseball and his fandom of Heine Manush. He was a super cool guy...WW2 vet, Ohio State track guy...just a good dude
I was hooked...

Fast forward almost 40 years. I re-connected with this gentlemen's daughter after finding a birthday card he had sent me years ago with a '33 Goudey Jesse Haines inside. All of our parent's recently passed, we were catching up and baseball came up...and I asked whatever happened to that wonderful collection.

Long story short, I was honored to be able to add these cards to my and my dad's collection.

The Ruth has a couple of creases, but overall pretty nice in hand. Certainly not high grade, but presentable. All of the Diamond Stars are actually very nice...again, not high grade but no creases, just corners and surface wear. The '33 Foxx, Bengough and Grove are pretty rough...but "intact" and look look just like I remember them. I had even saved the piece of paper where I had "catalogued" these back in '83.

sorry for the ramble...I love this site and have enjoyed talking with some of you
hope y'all have a great Memorial Day...I'll be watching baseball, looking at these cards...and I think i have a couple of old '83 topps packs to rip into

Mike
